Tax Auditor Position
The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA) is seeking motivated individuals to join its growing workforce as Tax Auditors. Job Duties and Responsibilities
Under supervision, the Tax Auditor conducts field audits, fraud investigations, and tax evasion audits. Responsibilities include auditing accounts, attending tax law and audit training, scheduling appointments, meeting with taxpayers and representatives, explaining audit findings, identifying fraud schemes, potentially testifying in court, and preparing audit reports and correspondence.
This position is designated as a mobile worker, requiring fifty percent or more of time working at various locations. Positions outside of California require travel at least fifty percent of the time out of state, including overnight travel.
Work Arrangement and Telework
This position offers a hybrid work arrangement. For eligible candidates residing in California, partial telework may be available. All telework and hybrid schedules require a minimum number of days reporting to the office per week. Schedules are subject to change.
Salary Information
Salary ranges are: $4,695.00 - $6,173.00 (Alternate Range A) $5,805.00 - $7,632.00 (Alternate Range B)
New state employees will be hired at the minimum salary. Recruitment Hiring Above Minimum (HAM) may be available for Range A to eligible candidates starting December 30, 2025, at $5,528 per month.
Application and Hiring Process
Applications will be reviewed according to cut-off dates: February 28, 2026; April 15, 2026; May 29, 2026. Late applications will be considered for the next review period. The recruitment may be used to fill additional vacancies within 180 days.
Special Requirements
- The employer participates in E-Verify.
- Position requires fingerprinting and a successful background investigation.
- Travel is required fifty percent (50%) of the time, potentially including overnight stays for training.
- Education requirements must be met, with foreign transcripts requiring verification of U.S. equivalency.
