Job Summary
Join the Calgary Airports' Airside Operations team as an Airfield Summer Student. This 4-month full-time term position, starting May 2026, offers a unique opportunity to contribute to maintaining YYC’s airfield safety and operational readiness. You will work alongside experienced operators, learning large-scale airfield maintenance and gaining exposure to specialized airport equipment in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment. The hourly rate for this position is $21.00.
What the Team is Like
The Airside Operations team is a close-knit, hands-on group essential for keeping YYC's airfield safe and ready for aircraft movements. Their work directly impacts safe and efficient airport operations, especially during challenging winter conditions. As a student, you will gain invaluable experience in a dynamic environment, contributing to the support of safe travel for the community.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform surface repairs on asphalt, concrete, and gravel roadways to ensure smooth and safe travel conditions.
- Prepare surfaces and measure areas for precise line painting, then install and apply line markings using appropriate equipment.
- Manage vegetation across airfield and groundside areas using various equipment, including push mowers, weed trimmers, and small mowers.
- Assist with year-round repair and maintenance of fences, gates, and signage to maintain clear, secure boundaries and roadway signage.
- Participate in the airport’s Foreign Object Debris (FOD) control programs to keep airside surfaces safe and clean.
- Complete minor repairs and general equipment maintenance (e.g., basic checks, cleaning) to support overall equipment functionality.
What You Need to Bring
- Enrollment in a post-secondary program related to aviation, trades, construction, transportation, or a related field, with a commitment to return to studies after the summer term. Documentation confirming continued enrollment will be required.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC); assistance will be provided for this process.
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug and alcohol testing due to the safety-sensitive nature of the position.
- Ability to obtain steel-toed shoes or boots (an allowance will be provided).
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license and a current driver’s abstract, as driving is part of the role's duties.
Additional Skills That Are an Asset
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French.
- Background or experience in aviation.
- Comfort with hands-on and outdoor work.
- Prior experience using vehicles or basic equipment.
- Strong willingness to learn new equipment and procedures.
