About the role
Cybersecurity Intern
The Cybersecurity Intern provides project-based support to the Cybersecurity team within IT, contributing to a range of initiatives across the cybersecurity program. This is a temporary, ten-week, part-time, onsite position designed to give the intern hands-on exposure to enterprise security operations while delivering measurable value to the team. The intern works under the direction of the Cybersecurity Manager, supports day-to-day team activities, and delivers a summary of their work to IT leadership at the conclusion of the internship.
Essential Functions, Roles, and Responsibilities
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Practice safe work habits and comply with all quality, safety, health, and environmental policies, procedures, programs, and regulations relevant to the position.
- Assist with vulnerability management activities, including triage, prioritization, owner assignment, and remediation tracking.
- Author, update, and maintain security documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures under the direction of the Cybersecurity Manager.
- Support identity and access management initiatives, including documentation, testing, and end-user enablement.
- Observe and assist with security monitoring, alert triage, and investigation activities to learn enterprise detection and response operations.
- Build and maintain reporting artifacts such as dashboards, trackers, and status reports that communicate security posture and remediation progress to leadership.
- Participate in team meetings, project ceremonies, and security exercises as scheduled.
- Complete assigned project work and deliver a written summary and presentation to IT leadership at the conclusion of the internship.
- Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Cybersecurity Manager or IT leadership.
Education, Training, Experience
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Security, or a related technical discipline.
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 preferred.
- Prior coursework or hands-on project experience in one or more of the following: information security, cloud computing, networking, scripting, or systems administration.
Certifications, Licenses, Registrations
- None required. CompTIA Security+ or equivalent foundational certification is a plus but not required for hire.
Job Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
- Foundational understanding of cybersecurity concepts, including the CIA triad, common attack types, and defense-in-depth.
- Familiarity with at least one security domain such as SIEM, EDR, vulnerability scanning, identity and access management, or incident response.
- Working knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems and basic networking concepts.
- Experience with at least one scripting or query language such as Python, PowerShell, KQL, or SQL.
- Ability to research, summarize, and document technical concepts in plain language for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to follow direction, ask thoughtful questions, take ownership of assigned tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Self-motivated, accountable, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams).
