Job Description
Laboratory Technician
Bureau Veritas is seeking a motivated Laboratory Technician to join our Environmental department in Calgary. This is a contract position until October 2026, focused on producing high-quality analytical data safely and on time.
Basic Purpose
The Laboratory Technician will perform sample preparation and extractions of target compounds within specific matrices, providing general lab support for sample analysis. The role requires a results-oriented approach, adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and a commitment to quality and timely delivery.
Key Accountability/Responsibilities
- Review LIMS summary reports to plan and organize daily work.
- Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) for sample preparation and basic testing.
- Identify non-routine samples and seek guidance for handling.
- Meet client quality and TAT specifications, ensuring samples are analyzed within holding times.
- Identify and communicate procedural non-conformances to the Supervisor.
- Employ proper laboratory techniques to prevent mislabelling, sample mix-up, and cross-contamination.
- Provide general lab support and updates on workstation status.
- Support and comply with all Bureau Veritas policies, Quality System, and Health & Safety programs.
- Participate in department and Health & Safety meetings, and internal/external audits as requested.
- Keep work area clean, neat, and organized.
- Maintain training records and relevant qualifications.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Skills And Knowledge
- Post-Secondary education or equivalent experience.
- Ability to accurately follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and instructions.
- Detail-oriented with strong record-keeping skills.
- Good time-management, communication, multi-tasking, and priority-setting abilities.
- Strong computer skills.
- Positive outlook and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
- Adaptable to changing environments.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Quick learner.
Working Conditions
- High level of work production in a fast-paced lab environment.
- May involve repetition of the same process.
- Requires patience, tenacity, and persistence.
- Flexible working hours, potential for overtime and shift work.
- May involve long periods of standing.
- Some lifting and carrying (up to 10kg).
- Hazardous materials are handled following established safety procedures and with appropriate equipment.
