About the Materials Science Engineer - AI Training Role at Braintrust
This is an excellent opportunity to supplement your income while advancing your career. You'll apply your Materials Science expertise to help train cutting-edge AI systems. Our client has successfully hired over 1,000 Braintrust talents and plans to continue expanding this initiative. Many subject-matter experts in similar roles earn $12,000/month or more, offering a significant income supplement. You can work as much or as little as you want, with 20 hours per week suggested but not mandatory. Your hourly rate will be determined by Outlier AI based on your location.
Qualified applicants will be invited to join the Outlier platform, where they will complete an ID verification and a short assessment before gaining access to the work queue.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree and/or PhD in Materials Science or Materials Engineering
- Strong understanding of:
- Materials characterization
- Thermodynamics & kinetics
- Polymers, ceramics, metals, composites
- Microstructure–property relationships
- Failure analysis
- Ability to explain complex scientific concepts in clear English
Preferred Qualifications
- Research or industry experience in materials development, lab analysis, or modeling
- Experience conducting experiments, analysis, or simulations
- Familiarity with scientific programming or analysis tools (Python, MATLAB, etc.)
- Experience writing technical reports or scientific explanations
What You’ll Be Working On
As a Materials Science Engineer - AI Training, you will help train AI models to better understand materials science, engineering principles, and scientific reasoning. No prior AI/ML experience is needed, as comprehensive instructions will be provided.
Example tasks include:
- Reviewing AI-generated explanations of material behavior
- Assessing the correctness of thermodynamic or kinetics-based reasoning
- Evaluating descriptions of characterization methods (SEM, XRD, DSC, etc.)
- Writing clear explanations of properties, testing, or material selection
- Reviewing step-by-step scientific reasoning for accuracy
