Position Summary
The Ophthalmic Technician works alongside an Ophthalmologist to perform eye exams, diagnose eye diseases, and administer treatments. The role involves extensive data collection to support proper diagnosis, as well as general office duties such as answering phones, patient scheduling, exam room preparation, and patient documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- American Heart Association BLS
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or obtain within one year
- Preferred: Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
- Preferred: One year of patient care experience
Essential Job Functions
- Answer and return phone calls from patients and providers
- Handle confidential patient information and EMR documentation
- Room patients and initiate eye exams including history and vision screening
- Prepare patients for exams with the Ophthalmologist
- Perform diagnostic testing and imaging (visual fields, OCT, refractions, etc.)
- Assist with in-office procedures such as injections, biopsies, and excisions
- Help with patient scheduling for outpatient surgery
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong judgment, patience, and professional demeanor with skills in tact, discretion, and confidentiality. Must efficiently prioritize work, meet deadlines, and proficiently utilize computer applications.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and support up to 50 pounds
- Stamina for extended hours including sitting, walking, or standing
- Flexible schedule including weekends and after-hours shifts
- On-call availability to promptly respond to needs
Exposure
The position involves exposure to bloodborne pathogens, radiation, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and emotionally challenging situations.
