Job Summary
The Pharmacy Operations Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the pharmacy department. This role also involves providing pharmaceutical care to patients as a staff pharmacist when needed. The Pharmacy Operations Manager will assist the Director of Pharmacy in ensuring all legal, regulatory, and accrediting requirements are met to the highest standards. A professional presence throughout the hospital is expected. The goal is to ensure pharmacy services and activities align with the goals and standards of Boston Medical Center Health System and the hospital.
Essential Responsibilities / Duties
- Supervise pharmacists and pharmacy supportive personnel.
- Maintain staff schedules.
- Oversee training for central pharmacists, new hires, and pharmacist shift responsibilities.
- Arrange and conduct hospital and pharmacy orientation for new hires within 60 days.
- Develop and implement a training and competency program for all staff, maintaining records of completed competencies.
- Participate in the hospital P&T committee as directed by the Director of Pharmacy.
- Participate in hospital committee meetings to enhance practice and patient care.
- Participate and direct pharmacy quality activities.
- Contribute to the medication safety program through medication incident reviews, proactive reporting, committee presentations, and action planning.
- Establish standards and training for sterile product preparation in compliance with USP 795/797/800 non-sterile and sterile preparation standards, including annual review of master formulation records.
- Participate in precepting residents during administration rotations and contribute to project development and oversight.
- Attend and participate in departmental meetings, in-services, and quality improvement programs.
- Maintain all required training and education per department requirements.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of information systems and other technology applications within the Pharmacy.
- Supervise the technician purchaser in the procurement of medications and supplies in accordance with GPO bids and best demonstrated practices.
- Collaborate with the purchasing team, locally and at the corporate level, to ensure inventory control and adherence to DSCSA requirements.
- Ensure adequate control and documentation of controlled substances, including Power of Attorney to order Schedule II-IV drugs.
- Meet or exceed all Accreditation Body (TJC, DNV, CMS, BOP) standards related to pharmacy.
- Use best practices in formulary and cost control.
- Participate in the process for patient and department charges, ensuring accurate and timely posting to accounts.
- Supervise all drug storage areas in accordance with legal and best demonstrated practice.
- Oversee preparation and delivery of medication throughout the hospital.
- Achieve satisfactory scores on operations assessments/audits (TJC, Regulatory, Accreditation, BOP, etc).
- Assist the Director with the pharmacy budget and all financial program aspects, reconciling financial information and communicating on a timely basis.
- Adhere to hospital and departmental policies and procedures, complying with all requirements related to risk management, safety, security, fire, and infection control.
- Comply with all applicable state, local, and federal regulations.
- Serve as the Pharmacist-In-Charge in case of a prolonged absence of the Director of Pharmacy.
- Perform as a staff pharmacist as needed.
Secondary Position Roles
- Maintain safety, integrity, and professionalism of the pharmacy.
- Provide in-services to staff and hospital professional staff.
- Monitor acquisition and renewal of all pharmacy licenses and permits and staff licenses.
- Supervise monthly medication area inspections and maintain supporting documentation.
- Conduct periodic staff meetings.
- Perform special projects as requested.
- Meet dress code standards; maintain a neat and clean appearance and conscientious personal hygiene.
- Treat patients and families with respect and dignity, assuring confidentiality of patient records.
- Maintain good working relationships within the department and with other departments.
- Assist in the resolution of problems or concerns while being a supportive team member.
- Consistently strive to promote great customer service in all aspects of the job.
- Perform MUE and report results in committee meetings as appropriate.
Job Requirements
Education & Experience
- Graduate of a college of Pharmacy accredited by ACPE or equivalent.
- At least 5 years of hospital pharmacy experience or HSPLA residency completion.
Certifications, Licenses & Registrations
- Current license to practice Pharmacy in Massachusetts and maintain all required CE, or be licensed by the hire date.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Preferred: Pyxis/Omnicell, Epic, Microsoft Office.
Compensation Range
$109,000.00 - $158,000.00
This range offers an estimate based on minimum job qualifications. However, our approach to determining base pay is comprehensive, considering factors like education, experience, skills, and certifications/licenses as they directly relate to position requirements, as well as business/organizational needs, internal equity, and market-competitiveness. This range is based on Boston-area data and is subject to modification based on geographic location.
