About Blue Origin and the Ground Software Network / Cyber Security Engineer Role

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We are dedicated to developing reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. This role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, specifically the Blue Ring program, which focuses on space infrastructure and increasing on-orbit mobility. We are a passionate team solving problems and impacting the history of space exploration.

As a Ground Software Network / Cyber Security Engineer, you will be instrumental in building, integrating, and testing the software for the Blue Ring Mission Operations Center, essential for flying on-orbit vehicles. You will contribute innovative solutions in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating personal leadership, technical competence, and meticulous attention to detail. This position directly impacts safe and reliable spaceflight, requiring your dedicated commitment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, verify, and deploy leading software and network security best practices for mission operations software systems, ensuring overall Ground System success.
  • Develop, secure, and maintain the network supporting mission operations equipment.
  • Perform trade studies for software tool development (in-house, subcontract, adapt, or purchase).
  • Conduct threat modeling and security architecture work directly with Software and SRE teams to inform best practices and proactively mitigate vulnerabilities.
  • Perform security assessments and code reviews to identify software vulnerabilities.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (flight vehicle systems, mission control infrastructure, operations, customers) to define software requirements, architectures, and designs.
  • Develop rapid prototypes to prove concepts and quantify technical risks.
  • Coordinate with mission control infrastructure and mission system engineers for system verification and qualification to meet requirements and safety standards.
  • Produce technical documentation for software architecture, design, verification plans, user manuals, and training material.
  • Follow Blue Origin and customer-required software development processes for safety and reliability.
  • Support frequent update cycles for pre-flight testing, mission validation, and operations training.
  • Maintain mission control software operations (maintenance, flaw correction, enhancements) during training, ground data system verification, spacecraft integration, and flight.
  • Integrate software components, create and run unit/system-level tests, validate with Software-in-the-Loop and Hardware-in-the-Loop simulators, and release certified code.

Qualifications

  • B.S. or higher degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, mathematics, cybersecurity, physics, aerospace engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of application or network security experience with direct hands-on software development.
  • Strong understanding of security best practices, threat modeling, and risk assessment.
  • Experience in network device installation, configuration, and monitoring.
  • Strong familiarity with Linux environments and advanced Unix system administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with modern CI/CD practices and infrastructure-as-code tooling.
  • Experience in software engineering across the full lifecycle: system design/analysis, requirement capture/development, software implementation/verification, system integration, qualification, and release.
  • Experience in software build automation, continuous integration, configuration management, verification, and deployment.
  • Demonstrated software development skills in multiple languages, with the ability to implement in the most appropriate language.
  • Highly organized team player with excellent technical written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of resourcefulness.
  • Top Secret Security Clearance with Security+ Certification.

Desired Qualifications

  • CISSP and/or CCNA certification.
  • Experience designing and developing ground software for space flight operations.
  • Experience developing complex applications in Python.
  • Experience with REST, Kafka, GRPC.
