About the role
About The Role
Commercial decisions are frequently made based on momentum or surface level metrics that mask underlying problems. A company might see rising sales while ignoring the fact that their cost to serve those customers is increasing at a faster rate. Business strategy often gets lost in high level language and complex presentations that avoid the uncomfortable realities of unit economics. Our clients come to us when they need to strip away the noise and understand the actual mechanical truths of their business.
As a Data Analyst Assistant at Blue Oak Consulting, you will be the person who helps us get to those truths. This role exists to bridge the gap between high level claims and the hard numbers. You will support our consultants by cleaning raw data sets, identifying trends in customer behavior, and testing whether a client's assumptions actually hold up under scrutiny. Your work ensures that when we give advice, it is rooted in facts rather than optimistic projections or corporate narratives.
About Blue Oak
We provide commercial advice for complex business problems where the answer is not obvious and requires deep economic analysis.
Our team works directly with leadership to analyze pricing architectures, capital allocation, and fixed cost structures.
We prioritize the truth of the numbers over the momentum of a corporate story.
We are skeptical of traditional strategy talk and prefer to focus on the variables that actually drive outcomes.
Our firm is fully remote, relying on clear written communication and disciplined thinking.
We do not focus on delivering massive slide decks, but instead surface the real risks and choices a business faces.
What We Need From You
We are looking for someone who is naturally curious and comfortable with being skeptical. You do not need to have years of professional experience, but you do need to be comfortable working with numbers and basic data tools. You should have a solid grasp of spreadsheet software such as Excel or Google Sheets and the ability to organize messy information into a clear, usable format. Accuracy is critical in this position. A misplaced decimal or a faulty formula can lead to the wrong commercial conclusion, so we need you to be the kind of person who double checks your work because they want to find the right answer.
Beyond technical skills, you must be a clear and direct writer. Since we work in a fully remote environment, much of our collaboration happens through the written word. You should be able to explain what you found in a data set without using filler or vague adjectives. If you see something in the data that looks odd or contradicts what a client has told us, we expect you to raise it. We value people who are more interested in the accuracy of the data than in being polite about an error.
What The Role Offers
This position provides an immediate look into how significant business decisions are actually made. You will not be stuck doing repetitive busy work. Instead, you will be helping us solve real problems for companies across various sectors, from SaaS to manufacturing. You will learn a rigorous way of thinking about business economics that goes far beyond what is taught in typical business programs. We will teach you how to look at a balance sheet or a customer log and see the actual risks that others often miss.
Because we are a fully remote firm, you will have flexibility in how you manage your day, provided the work is done with precision. You will be part of a team that values your intellectual contribution and encourages you to ask difficult questions. This is an environment where the quality of your logic and your ability to find the truth in the numbers matter more than your job title or seniority level.
Who Tends To Do Well Here
The people who thrive at Blue Oak are those who enjoy the process of peeling back layers to see how things really work. Success in this role looks like producing work that is so accurate and well organized that it becomes the foundation for a client's entire strategy. You will do well if you are more interested in the logic of a business than in the polish of a presentation. We look for individuals who are disciplined, attentive to the smallest details, and comfortable working in an environment where facts are the final authority.
