The Opportunity: Staff Water Operations Specialist

Black & Veatch delivers essential design, procurement, and construction solutions to provide wastewater treatment to communities worldwide. We partner with public and private clients, focusing on life cycle economy, efficiency, and reliability. As a Staff Water Operations Specialist, you will play a critical role in supporting clients with the startup, commissioning, troubleshooting, and training of their operations staff to effectively manage new and upgraded facilities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide expert startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting services for:
    • Conventional and advanced wastewater treatment systems.
    • Biosolids groundwater systems that chlorinate and/or chloraminate, including hydrogen sulfide removal/softening.
    • Conventional surface water treatment and advanced disinfection/filtration systems.
  • Prepare essential documentation such as standard operating procedures (SOPs), energy control procedures, job safety analyses (JSA), and operation and maintenance (O&M) manuals for both new and existing facilities.
  • Conduct effective onsite training programs for operations staff.
  • Evaluate staffing requirements, operating costs, and system redundancy to ensure reliable operations.
  • Undertake significant travel, up to 75%, to client sites as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 10 years of experience in wastewater operations or commissioning of wastewater plants, and/or water treatment operations or commissioning of water treatment plants.
  • Demonstrated plant startup and commissioning experience is a must.
  • Proficiency in technical writing skills and basic computer skills (Word, Excel, PDF, Microsoft Visio) are essential.
  • A Water/Wastewater Operator License is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology or sciences preferred, or any other degree, specialized training, or experience that uniquely qualifies the individual for the job responsibilities.
  • Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
  • All applicants must successfully complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected), which may include criminal/civil background checks, drug screens, and motor vehicle records searches, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • A valid Driver's License is required.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

This role involves potential travel up to 75%. Professionals located near a Black & Veatch office have the option of a hybrid work model, balancing three days in the office with two days of remote work. Preferred candidates will be within a commutable distance to any of our office locations.
