This Mid-level QA Automation Engineer Java role is primarily focused on helping a development team effectively and efficiently deliver high-quality products and services. You will work with delivery teams to facilitate the successful release of products and innovations to our customers. From idea inception through user delivery, you'll be involved every step, analysing implementation risk, feature integration, user reception, and, crucially, shipping quality software.

You will test web and mobile applications, as well as the inner workings of the Betfair system. We actively encourage testing at every level of the technology stack, from service configurations to databases and APIs. Betfair fosters open collaboration, ensuring you're involved early, with access to source code and developers to fully understand system functionality.

Skills, Capabilities & Experience Required

  • Previous testing experience writing and executing test plans, preferably as an embedded tester.
  • Experience with manual testing methods and understanding automation benefits.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of different technology platforms.
  • Demonstrable experience testing in service-oriented architectures and understanding data flow.
  • Ability to quickly grasp complex technical concepts and provide immediate advice.
  • Understanding of relatively advanced solution architecture including system design, data design, and data flow.
  • Functional knowledge of a development language such as Swift, Java, or C#.
  • Experience testing at API layers (e.g., REST).
  • Exposure to automation testing, either coding or designing tests.
  • Experience working with version control systems such as Git.
  • Understanding of build and configuration tools such as Jenkins and Puppet.
  • Experience working with databases.
  • Understanding of agile methodologies and their application.
  • Proven clear and confident communication skills.
  • Keen eye for detail.
  • Drive to constantly learn and improve.

Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Carry out testing of new software development (where requirements are defined or ambiguous) using appropriate test oracles and stakeholder feedback.
  • Apply common software testing heuristics to applications under test.
  • Produce or advocate for concise yet comprehensive deployment and release plans.
  • Advise on issue severity based on system/product understanding.
  • Test system components (e.g., web services and API) integrated end-to-end and at earliest integration points.
  • Influence the planning and breakdown of development team work.
  • Test new software developments across mediums, models, and platform versions (e.g., mobile).
  • Work with developers to understand unit and integration test coverage to target other testing efforts.
  • Provide concise yet comprehensive testing plans and summaries/evaluations for complex or high-risk developments.
  • Often pair with developers in product development coding and testing efforts.
  • Advise team on difficulty and effort involved in testing features.
  • Define testable user stories, especially acceptance criteria, with business analysts, developers, and stakeholders.
  • Work to prevent requirements misunderstandings from being detected late in the development cycle.
  • Contribute to regression testing processes such as mobile release cycles.
  • Build automated tests or tooling where appropriate.
  • Diagnose issues and identify fixes for failing automation tests.
  • Provide technical support to other QA community members.
  • Ensure sufficient consistent traceability of testing efforts across the team.
  • Drive improvements on supplementary tooling to support product testability.
  • Drive improvements in how Engineering configures, uses, and manages test environments and test data.
  • Use computers or computer systems (including hardware and software) to program, write programs, set up functions, enter data, or process information.
