Device Engineering at Barclays

Purpose of the Role
The purpose of this role is to build and maintain infrastructure platforms and products that support applications and data systems, utilizing hardware, software, networks, and cloud computing platforms as required. The aim is to ensure the infrastructure is reliable, scalable, and secure, focusing on the reliability, availability, and scalability of systems through software engineering techniques, automation, and best practices in incident response.
Key Responsibilities and Skills
To be successful in this role, you should possess the following skills and capabilities:
- Expert-level PowerShell scripting, including modules and API integrations.
- Deep knowledge of Windows imaging (capture/customize WIM files, DISM, WinPE).
- Experience with device drivers, BIOS/UEFI, and hardware compatibility.
- Proficiency in patch management and OS servicing strategies.
- Familiarity with Active Directory, Group Policy, and networking fundamentals.
- Design, maintain, and automate Windows 10/11 OS images using MDT (Microsoft Deployment Toolkit) and SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager).
- Develop standardized deployment workflows for diverse hardware/software configurations.
- Integrate security baselines (e.g., CIS Benchmarks) into OS deployments.
- Administer SCCM/MECM infrastructure (site hierarchy, boundaries, DP management).
- Create and deploy applications, packages, software updates, and task sequences.
- Troubleshoot deployment failures and optimize SCCM performance.
- Script complex tasks (e.g., driver injection, post-build configurations) using PowerShell.
- Automate imaging, patching, reporting, and compliance workflows.
- Engineer solutions for device provisioning (Autopilot), co-management (Intune/SCCM), and endpoint analytics.
- Manage driver/firmware updates via Dell Command | Intel vPro/HPIA.
- Implement zero-touch deployment (ZTD) strategies.
- Extend MDT/SCCM with modern tools and evaluate/integrate cloud-based solutions (Azure, Intune).
- Maintain documentation (architecture diagrams, SOPs, knowledge base).
- Partner with Security, App Dev, and Service Desk teams to resolve endpoint issues.
- Mentor junior engineers and lead continuous improvement initiatives.

- Build Engineering: Develop, deliver, and maintain high-quality infrastructure solutions to fulfill business requirements, ensuring measurable reliability, performance, availability, and ease of use. This includes identifying appropriate technologies and solutions.
