The Data Consultant Role

As a Data Consultant, you will define and deliver a client as information management and exploitation strategy to transform the way an organisation derives value from its data assets, whilst securing and managing them appropriately. The Data Consultant has expertise in data exploitation, data solutions, data management, problem solving and business consulting and analysis. This puts them in a position to advise client organisations on data-driven transformation. You will focus on the people, process, business change, requirements and planning aspects of data challenges, but will have a good high-level understanding of approaches, techniques and tools in data architecture, data solution delivery and data science.

This role works under broad direction, often self-initiated, and you will be fully responsible for meeting allocated technical and/or group objectives. You will analyse, design, plan, execute and evaluate work to time, cost and quality targets. You will establish milestones and have a significant role in the assignment of tasks and/or responsibilities. You will influence the organisation, customers, suppliers, partners and peers on the contribution of your specialism, making decisions which impact the success of assigned work, including results, deadlines and budget. You will have significant influence over the allocation and management of resources appropriate to given assignments. Leading user/customer and group collaboration throughout all stages of work is crucial to ensure users’ needs are met consistently through each work stage. You will build appropriate and effective business relationships across the organisation and with customers, suppliers and partners, and create and support collaborative ways of working across your group/area of responsibility, facilitating collaboration between stakeholders who have diverse objectives.

You will implement and execute policies aligned to strategic plans, performing an extensive range and variety of complex technical and/or professional work activities. This will involve undertaking work which requires the application of fundamental principles in a wide and often unpredictable range of contexts. You will engage and coordinate with subject matter experts to resolve complex issues as they relate to customer/organisational requirements, and understand the relationships between your own specialism and customer/organisational requirements.

Core Duties & Responsibilities

  • Understand and distil business challenges in complex environments, providing thought leadership.
  • Develop and action data strategies and roadmaps, for example through undertaking maturity assessments and user needs analysis to define a vision and articulate the steps to achieving it.
  • Consider business and cultural change aspects alongside technical data challenges.
  • Define and support the implementation of an organisation as data governance framework.
  • Define the operating model required to support an organisation as data vision.
  • Develop relationships with senior client stakeholders and represent their interests.
  • Translate business goals into actionable plans.
  • Communicate complex data challenges and strategies to senior client stakeholders and delivery teams.
  • Take responsibility for understanding client requirements and user needs, delivering analysis and problem resolution. Identifies, evaluates and recommends options.
  • Manage the investigation of corporate data requirements. Coordinates the application of data analysis and data modelling techniques, based upon a detailed understanding of corporate information requirements, in order to establish, modify or maintain data structures and their associated components (entity descriptions, relationship descriptions, attribute definitions).
  • Seek to fully address client needs, enhancing the capabilities and effectiveness of solutions by ensuring that they are properly understood and appropriately exploited.
  • Provide well-informed advice, typically on more than one topic, taking steps to ensure that it is properly understood and appropriately exploited.
  • Work under the supervision of and provide support to seniors in the analysis and documentation of strategic data options and direction.
  • Draft and maintain policies, standards and procedures for information and/or data governance.
  • Review information and data systems for compliance against organisational policies, legislation and risk. Makes recommendations for implementing any required changes.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of a broad range of industry-wide modelling techniques. Advises on the choice of techniques and approach influencing customers accordingly.
