About the Role

The Senior Systems Engineer at Automattic delivers high availability, performance, and security for tens of billions of page views every month. You will join a small, integrated team managing global infrastructure across 30 data centers on 6 continents.

Responsibilities

  • Maximize service availability and uptime through proactive planning and automation.
  • Optimize server-side and client-side performance and work with third-party services.
  • Ensure service security with proactive monitoring, rapid incident response, and data backup management.
  • Bridge the gap between development and operations to support rapid software shipping.

What You Bring

  • Experience with large Nginx setups and advanced routing configuration.
  • Proven track record with MySQL/MariaDB deployments and performance tuning.
  • Expertise in running and debugging PHP applications at scale.
  • Deep understanding of filesystems, networking, memory management, and kernel internals.
  • Ability to architect, prototype, and maintain solutions autonomously.
  • Extreme attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence.
  • Willingness to travel 2-3 weeks per year for team meet-ups.
