The Opportunity
You are an experienced Aquatic Scientist/Biologist who has led freshwater field studies, supported construction monitoring, authored reports, and written environmental assessments related to aquatic species and ecosystems. This role reports to the Calgary office, with travel required to British Columbia, other parts of Alberta, or the Yukon, Northwest Territories, or Nunavut for short periods. Ausenco supports remote workers based outside of Calgary, in Southern Alberta or Southeastern BC, depending on experience level.
About The Role
- Planning and executing aquatic studies, preparing comprehensive technical reports.
- Providing technical and regulatory expertise on projects interacting with aquatic environments.
- Offering environmental monitoring support during construction projects in or adjacent to freshwater environments.
- Supporting the development of environmental assessment components for aquatic species and ecosystems.
- Managing or coordinating projects from initial proposals through to the delivery of quality reports.
- Leading or contributing to the development of regulatory submissions, including Codes of Practice notifications, DFO Requests for Review, and Authorizations.
- Marketing Ausenco’s full range of services to existing and potential clients through meetings, workshops, and conferences.
- Liaising effectively with regulatory agencies, stakeholders, and Indigenous peoples.
- Mentoring more junior staff, fostering their professional growth.
- Adapting effectively to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
About You
- A university degree in biology or a related scientific field.
- A professional designation (e.g., R.P.Bio or P.Biol.) or eligibility for such a designation.
- 5-10 years of progressive experience in aquatic biology or environmental science.
- Proven experience planning and executing biological programs and leading teams.
- Strong understanding of freshwater fish and their habitats in Alberta, BC, and/or the northern territories.
- Excellent working knowledge of provincial and federal regulatory requirements for fish or fish habitat studies, permitting, or impact assessment.
- Experience with both provincial and federal permitting processes.
- Practical experience undertaking construction environmental monitoring.
- Exceptional attention to detail, coupled with excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.
- Ability to think independently and strategically, maintain a positive attitude, be self-motivated, and demonstrate strong work initiative.
- Capacity to adapt to a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.
Bonus Points
- Experience working with provincial regulators and municipal authorities on aquatic environment permits and authorizations.
- Experience working with federal regulators on permits and authorizations.
- Experience collaborating with Indigenous peoples on environmental projects.
- Experience with offsetting and habitat compensation in aquatic environments.
- Proven client liaison and business development experience.
- Statistical analysis experience.
- Experience with other biological disciplines (e.g., terrestrial or vegetation) or contaminated sites.
