This Security Engineer Intern role is based in Seattle, WA, and requires candidates to be willing and able to work from this location. Please note, this position is not eligible for F1 and J1 students and does not support work sponsorship.
The paid internship runs for 12 weeks, typically from May/June 2026 to August/September 2026.
Your Future Team
As a Security Engineer Intern, you will join our Security team, responsible for safeguarding Atlassian services that serve tens of thousands of customers. You will report to a Security Engineering Manager and benefit from the guidance of a dedicated team mentor, working alongside some of the industry's top Security Engineers.
Responsibilities
What you'll do
If you're passionate about solving complex security challenges, you'll contribute across four key areas:
- Build and operate new monitoring and analytics systems to detect potential compromises.
- Develop automation scripts to identify and exploit vulnerabilities within Atlassian products and marketplace applications.
- Research and propose product features to enhance the security posture of our software against common vulnerabilities.
- Design and secure hardware, networks, and corporate infrastructure.
Qualifications
Your Background
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate:
- Experience in programming with languages such as Java, Python, JavaScript, or other object-oriented programming languages.
- A clear interest in the security field, evidenced through academic coursework, previous internships, work experience, or personal projects.
- Comfort in writing code to achieve goals, not relying solely on third-party solutions.
- An interest in software engineering, shown through prior internships, work experience, projects, or publications.
- Knowledge of data structures, specifically their implementation and application to security challenges.
- Familiarity with applying common design patterns.
- Availability to commit to a 12-week full-time (40 hours/week) program during Summer 2026.
- Current full-time enrollment in a 4-year bachelor's degree program, returning to the program after the internship, and graduating by June 2027.
Compensation
Atlassian is committed to equitable and competitive compensation. The baseline of our salary range is intentionally set higher than typical market rates, reflecting our expectation to hire most candidates near this starting point. Base pay is ultimately determined by an individual's skills, expertise, and experience. Atlassian operates with three geographic pay zones in the United States. For this Security Engineer Intern role, the current base pay ranges per hour for new hires in each zone are:
- Zone A: $59/hr - $75/hr
- Zone B: $53/hr - $68/hr
- Zone C: $49/hr - $62/hr
