Job Description

About ATB Financial

At ATB, we exist to make it possible for our clients, team members and communities. Our purpose is more than aspirational. It's a real commitment we live every day through our values (what we call the ATB ID).

Life at ATB is about more than work. In fact, we’re consistently recognized as one of Canada's top employers thanks to our high-care, high-performance culture, upheld by the three commitments we make to our team members:

  • Impact in action: No matter where you are in the organization, you're empowered to make an impact in the lives of our clients and communities.
  • Thrive together: We want you—the unique, authentic you—to feel safe and celebrated at work. We're on a continuous journey to build the most flexible and inclusive programs.
  • Ready for tomorrow: We want to enable your success through interesting and challenging work, performance enablement, and learning and development.

About The Role

Reporting to the Chief Technology and Experience Officer, the SVP, Data, AI & Banking Operations is the visionary leader of ATB’s data ecosystem. This executive role is responsible for driving value creation and risk mitigation by transforming data into a strategic business asset. You will lead the "ATB Expert Advisory" strategy, delivering data-driven advice that empowers both team members and clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data & AI Strategy: Define and execute a 10-year enterprise data and analytics strategy that aligns with ATB’s digital innovation goals and business outcomes.
  • Governance & Ethics: Driving enterprise-wide frameworks for data governance, algorithmic transparency, and information policy to ensure security, quality, and regulatory compliance.
  • Innovation & Monetization: Lead research and development for new data products and services, expanding ATB’s market presence and growing revenue through direct and indirect data monetization.
  • Platform & Capability Oversight: Direct the development and deployment of enterprise-grade data platform and application management, sourcing models, and advanced analytical tools (AI/ML) to augment human performance and automate decision-making.
  • Data-First Culture: Champion data literacy and a data-driven mindset across the enterprise, ensuring all business lines can effectively interpret and exploit data assets.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Manage a hybrid ecosystem of internal talent and external vendor partners, maintaining ATB’s control over execution while maximizing efficiency and innovation.
  • Banking Operations: Lead and execute on critical banking operations for the enterprise across back office functions.

Observable Behaviours

  • Strategic Relationship Management: Partners with senior leaders to improve policies and standards by championing the ethical, secure, and transparent use of Data and AI technologies.
  • Transformational Leadership: Leads complex, multidisciplinary teams through technical endeavors while driving and embedding a "data-first" culture across the enterprise.
  • Analytical Excellence: Demonstrates outstanding problem-solving abilities, translating complex data insights into actionable business strategies.
  • Influence & Organizational Agility: Navigates formal and informal networks to build consensus and drive change without direct supervisory authority over all stakeholders.
  • Priority Setting: Focuses resources on high-impact initiatives, eliminates roadblocks, and maintains a disciplined approach to the 10-year strategy.
  • Strategic Influence & Ecosystem Developer: Acts as a high-impact Brand Ambassador and Internal Catalyst, leveraging executive presence and high EQ to embed a data-driven DNA across the enterprise while cultivating a premier industry network to secure a world-class talent pipeline and position the organization as a leader in the global AI ecosystem.
  • Client Data Management: transforming the enterprise data ecosystem into a high-velocity revenue engine by orchestrating predictive life-event advisory, autonomous credit staging, and Open Banking APIs that empower both client-directed agents and front-line advisors to deliver hyper-personalized, market-leading financial experiences.

Accreditation & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business, Computer Science, Data Science, or Information Science. Professional training in legal/regulatory areas is highly desirable.
  • Experience: 15+ years of progressive business experience, with 8–10 years specifically in data, analytics, or technology leadership at the executive level.
  • 5+ years leading cross-functional teams and enterprise-wide transformation programs within complex organizational contexts.
  • Proven track record in integrating complex information strategies and designing strategic metrics/scorecards.
  • Background in strategy or management consulting is preferred.

Core Skills

  • Data Literacy & Translation: Exceptional ability to translate between the languages of "quants," IT, and business executives to describe use cases and analytical options.
  • Financial Services Acumen: Deep understanding of banking business processes, including risk, regulatory factors, and information flow requirements.
  • Technical Domain Expertise: Knowledge across data warehousing, BI, MDM, data security/privacy, and enterprise architecture frameworks.
  • Executive Gravitas: The ability to "sell" complex ideas to the Board and stakeholders, driving cultural and technological change in a dynamic environment.
  • Strategic AI Orchestration: Deep understanding of the AI Lifecycle, including Large Language Model (LLM) fine-tuning, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), and the deployment of autonomous agents within a regulated environment.
  • Change Management & AI Fluency: The "gravitas" to lead a cultural shift, moving the organization from basic data literacy to advanced AI Fluency, where team members effectively co-pilot with digital agents.
  • Unstructured Data Literacy: Proven capability in extracting structured value from unstructured sources—transforming voice, text, and image data into actionable business intelligence.
  • Regulatory & Ethical Fluency: Advanced knowledge of global AI regulations (e.g., EU AI Act, Canadian AIDA) and the ability to build "Ethics by Design" into data products, ensuring bias mitigation and model explainability.
