What You'll Do
As a Consulting Veterinarian in Clinical Toxicology (CVCT), you will systematically gain toxicology knowledge through APC's structured training and mentoring process. This critical role involves managing cases regarding animals exposed to potentially dangerous substances in a fast-paced, challenging, yet supportive environment. You will share expertise with veterinarians, animal owners, and others, as well as provide consultation for support staff in managing APC cases. Additionally, you will participate in projects and events that support APC work, further education, and enhance communication within the ASPCA.
The ASPCA supports staff with robust career development. CVCTs may be eligible to sit for the American Board of Toxicology exam after 3 years and the American Board of Veterinary Toxicology exam after 3 years. Beyond board certification, career opportunities exist in various ASPCA departments and locations.
Where and When You'll Work
This is a regional remote position. Candidates must be U.S. based and reside within a 350-mile radius of the ASPCA Office in Champaign, IL, for the duration of employment, and be available for travel to Champaign, IL. Relocation assistance may be offered to candidates outside this radius willing to relocate.
The schedule for this Veterinarian, ASPCA Poison Control role is a late evening position, including nights, evenings, and holidays. Once proficiently trained, you may work full overnight shifts (10:00 p.m. – 6:00 a.m.) approximately 3-5 times per year or partial overnight shifts (4:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 8:00 p.m. – 4:00 a.m.) 6-10 times per year to cover vacations. Schedules are subject to change at the sole discretion of the ASPCA.
Compensation and Benefits
The base salary range for this role is $98,500 - $105,500. Staff may be eligible for additional pay such as shift differential, per diem, or a spot bonus. The ASPCA offers a comprehensive benefits package, including:

Responsibilities
Contact Center and Clinical Case Management (90%)
- Professionally manage medical and toxicology cases via telephone, email, and other electronic means from veterinarians, animal owners, and others.
- Obtain complete case histories and provide detailed, accurate diagnostic and treatment recommendations based on established APC protocols.
- Accurately document information conveyed during consultations into the electronic record.
- Collect payments as needed using provided software tools.
- Develop appropriate risk and rule-out assessments based on exposure history and clinical findings.
- Provide additional differential diagnoses when the original agent may not be responsible for clinical findings.
- Offer up-to-date treatment recommendations, including assistance with critical care procedures, interpretation of clinical laboratory results, fluid therapy, and pain management.
- Consult with on-site and off-site experts for complex cases.
- Advise support staff in case management per established APC protocols and veterinary knowledge.
- Maintain quality in case records and medical proficiency, implementing feedback from quality assessments.
- Achieve efficiency and daily case volume goals as required.
- Meet quality and customer service-related goals, exemplifying ASPCA core values.
Training, Professional Development, and Supporting Opportunities (up to 10%)
- Actively participate in on-site, off-site, or virtual training, including weekly veterinarian rounds.
- Develop protocols for the medical library database.
- Publish approved case reports or educational documents in peer-reviewed and lay journals/media.
- Contribute to APC blog posts on toxicology-related topics.
- Provide staff training lectures and participate in the staff mentorship program.
- Offer continuing education to the veterinary community via APC webinars and external conferences.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Must have a solid understanding of veterinary clinical medicine and a strong interest in toxicology.
- DVM, VMD, or equivalent from an accredited or foreign veterinary college (with ECFVG or PAVE certification).
- Must currently hold a veterinary license from any U.S. state.
- Ability to obtain an active Illinois state veterinary license within one year of hire.
- 1 year of clinical experience is required; emergency facility work experience and veterinary internship experience are preferred.
- Ability to handle emergency and challenging situations compassionately and consistently.
- Strong reasoning, decision-making, and communication skills, especially with emotional callers.
- Ability to de-escalate interactions and maintain professionalism under pressure.
- Proficiency in math, dosage calculation, technology (multiple databases, Windows, email, internet searches), and customer service.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including days, evenings, weekends, and holidays, in a distraction-free remote environment.
- Commitment and dedication to improving animal lives, demonstrating ownership, believing in teamwork, elevating others, and focusing on impact.
- English language required; Spanish is a plus.
