Senior Engineer I, Software Engineering (Phoenix, AZ)

The Role

As a Senior Software Engineer at ASM, you'll work at the intersection of advanced software, complex hardware systems, and real-world customer impact. You will serve as a technical leader, solving challenging software issues that improve the reliability, safety, and performance of semiconductor manufacturing equipment used by customers around the globe.

In this role, you'll lead complex investigations, influence system architecture decisions, and drive long-term software improvements that support next-generation semiconductor manufacturing technology.

What You'll Be Working On

  • Lead technical investigations involving software-related safety interlocks and validate corrective and preventive actions.
  • Analyze interactions across multiple subsystems to gain end-to-end understanding of platform behavior and workflows.
  • Drive Root Cause and Corrective Action (RCCA) efforts using packet captures, log analysis, and system-level troubleshooting.
  • Design, evaluate, and improve subsystem architectures, including multi-threaded applications and scheduler interactions.
  • Develop, deploy, maintain, and enhance software for advanced semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Troubleshoot complex software issues, including real-time control systems.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for field engineers and customers worldwide.
  • Partner with Quality Assurance and Support teams to reproduce field issues and improve regression test coverage.
  • Author and review software specifications, design documents, and test plans.
  • Investigate technical inquiries and provide clear analysis with actionable solutions.
  • Evaluate and influence software engineering tools, processes, and design decisions.
  • Coordinate rapid software fixes and deployments in high-impact customer environments.
  • Present technical findings, project updates, and data-driven insights to internal teams and customers, including DOE analysis results.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field with 7+ years of relevant experience, Master's degree with 4+ years, or PhD with 3+ years of relevant experience.
  • Strong software development experience using C++ and/or C#.
  • Solid understanding of multi-threaded application development.
  • Experience working with software specifications, technical documentation, and APIs.
  • Knowledge of software memory architecture, debugging, and performance analysis.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (Masters +).
  • Experience with software architecture, machine control systems, or semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
  • Hands-on experience with GUI development, device drivers, and interrupt-driven software.
  • Knowledge of networking, data communications, and EtherCAT.
  • Understanding of dynamic scheduling algorithms and deadlock avoidance techniques.
  • Experience with debuggers, build systems, and configuration management tools.
  • Ability to troubleshoot software, electrical, and mechanical issues from a system-level perspective.
  • Experience designing and analyzing complex Design of Experiments (DOE), including multivariate analysis or Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
