Job Description
About the Role
Ashby is seeking an ambitious Senior Software Engineer to join their Product Engineering team. This role offers the unique opportunity to take ownership of significant product areas, driving projects end-to-end. You will be involved in the entire product lifecycle, from initial research and specification to design and implementation. This is an ideal position for engineers who thrive on ambiguity, enjoy solving complex customer problems, and want to make a substantial impact on a rapidly growing product used by tens of thousands of daily users.
What Ashby Offers
Ashby provides a dynamic work environment that blends the agility of a seed-stage startup with the stability and scale of a growth-stage company. You'll experience an almost-no-meeting culture, with the agency to make product and design decisions. Our notable customers include Notion, Linear, Shopify, and Snowflake, and we boast strong growth metrics with millions in ARR. You will have the opportunity to work with a talented, humble, and kind engineering team, benefiting from a supportive environment with a dedicated SRE team and a design system.
Key Responsibilities
- Own significant portions of Ashby's products, from conception to delivery.
- Research customer needs, competitors, and market trends.
- Write product specifications, create wireframes, and design user interfaces.
- Implement robust and scalable software solutions across the full technology stack.
- Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define and build features.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of developer tooling and common components.
- Participate in in-person team and company meetups.
Engineering Culture at Ashby
Ashby's engineering culture is built on the belief that a small, talented team, given the right environment, can build high-quality software rapidly while maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Key tenets include minimal process with maximum ownership, natural collaboration fostered by deliberate communication, investment in tools for leverage, and a strong commitment to building a diverse team. Engineers are empowered to run their own projects, taking on responsibilities traditionally held by product and design roles. Focus time is highly valued, with engineers typically in fewer than 2 meetings per week.
Why You'll Thrive Here
- Ownership & Agency: Take full ownership of projects and make critical product and technical decisions.
- Impactful Work: Build features used by tens of thousands of daily users for prominent companies like Notion and Shopify.
- Innovative Environment: Work in a culture that encourages creativity and innovation, with minimal bureaucracy.
- Growth Opportunities: Develop your skills across the full stack in a fast-paced, high-growth startup.
- Work-Life Balance: Enjoy a culture that prioritizes focus time and regular working hours, with unlimited PTO.
Why You Might Not Be a Fit
- You require structured processes like sprint planning and formal project management.
- You prefer to focus solely on technical implementation without product or design involvement.
- You are uncomfortable with ambiguity or stepping outside of clearly defined technical tasks.
- You haven't previously led or taken ownership of significant projects.
- You are looking for a role focused on mentoring junior engineers, as the team is heavily tenured.
Technology Stack
We utilize TypeScript for both frontend and backend development, with React for the frontend and a GraphQL API. Our backend is powered by Node.js, with Postgres as our primary database and Redis for caching. While we don't require prior experience in this specific stack, a passion for typed languages is beneficial.
Interview Process
Our interview process is designed to help you showcase your best self, avoiding traditional leetcode or whiteboard exercises. It includes:
- An introductory call with the Hiring Manager.
- A technical screen involving pair programming within our actual codebase.
- Three non-coding interviews focusing on product thinking, technical design, and infrastructure.
You will meet 4-6 members of the engineering team and receive written guidance for each round. Your hiring manager will be your main point of contact and will assist with preparation.
Benefits
- Competitive salary and equity with a 10-year exercise window for stock options.
- Unlimited Paid Time Off (PTO), with encouragement to take it.
- A minimum of 12 weeks of fully paid parental leave.
- Generous budget for equipment, software, and office furniture.
- $100/month education budget, with additional coverage for conferences upon manager approval.
