Argus is seeking a talented Commodities Market News Reporter to join our Sydney team, working closely with editors across Asia. The ideal candidate will be a resourceful, versatile, and experienced business or commodities journalist capable of quickly becoming a subject matter expert in iron ore, coking and thermal coal, and nonferrous metals markets.
This role involves writing compelling news and in-depth market analysis for Argus’ live news website, as well as daily, weekly, and monthly publications. You will be instrumental in developing critical market contacts to support our commodity pricing teams, both in Asia and globally.
Experience in analyzing and dissecting complex data is highly valued. You will bring an inquisitive, detail-oriented perspective to market dynamics and drivers of supply and demand. As a well-read reporter, you'll stay abreast of the latest media related to these markets, which are crucial to Australia’s economic performance.
You will expand your network of market contacts, always upholding the highest journalistic independence and integrity standards. Opportunities for travel, attending industry events, presenting at conferences, and leading webinar sessions are available.
This position requires a collaborative approach, working effectively with team reporters and industry stakeholders. Self-motivation and initiative are key to driving projects forward and meeting tight deadlines.
Intelligence, curiosity, strong writing ability, tenacity in contact development, and a genuine desire to produce quality journalism are our primary criteria. While commodities experience is a bonus, it is not essential.

- Craft in-depth analyses and feature stories for various publications, highlighting Australian developments for an international audience.
- Ensure all writing adheres strictly to Argus style guidelines.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with critical sources to become a subject matter expert in the commodities market.
- Contribute pricing and market information to inform price assessments across Asia and globally.
- Cultivate new contacts to enhance newsgathering and general market intelligence.
- Attend and cover industry conferences in New South Wales and interstate.
- Produce insightful and well-researched market analyses with a strong emphasis on data utilization, including Argus’ proprietary pricing reports.
- Contribute to white papers, webinars, and blogs.
What We’re Looking For In You
- A strong Bachelor's degree, preferably in Economics, Journalism, Communications, Business, or a relevant field.
- An investigative mind and demonstrated excellence in writing, interviewing, and speaking skills.
- Prior experience in financial or commodities journalism across print, online, radio, or television is preferred.
- A genuine interest and enthusiasm for commodities, energy markets, global business, politics, and economics.
- Experience delivering breaking news, insightful market reports, and in-depth analytical articles is highly welcomed.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, and familiarity with AI tools.
- Exceptional communication skills and phone manner, with the ability to network and build rapport with industry executives and market traders.
- Please note: You must have the right to work in Australia to apply for this role.

- Competitive salary commensurate with education, experience, and skills.
- Hybrid working model (post-probation).
- Clear career development and progression opportunities.

- Ongoing training, mentoring, and professional development.
- Access to Employee Welfare & Employee Assistance Programme.
