Part-Time Data Engineer

Apex Systems is seeking a Part-Time Data Engineer for a 2-month contract role in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This position offers a hybrid/remote work arrangement.

Job Overview

This role provides short-term support for ad hoc Tableau reporting requests, assisting the team during a period of unexpected losses and while new talent is being hired. The successful candidate will support approximately 30 reports, with a focus on the top 3 reports that drive 90% of views from HR staff. Data is sourced from SQL Server and visualized on Tableau Server and Tableau Desktop.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide quantitative and qualitative data analysis and reporting of patterns, insights, and trends to decision-makers.
• Create high-quality, value-driven work that drives business outcomes, prioritizing the user experience and collaborating with the team for speed and innovation.
• Develop forecasts, reports, and dashboards that effectively communicate insights through data visualization.
• Utilize analytics and metrics to improve processes and provide data-driven forecasts impacting business costs and risks.
• Deliver results, insights, and recommendations to department leaders and business clients through written, verbal, and presentation formats.
• Produce actionable reports highlighting key performance indicators, identifying areas for operational improvement, and displaying root cause analysis of problems.
• Apply data visualization best practices and seek to understand business processes and user tasks.
• Implement and share best practices, methodologies, standards, and processes.
• Own analytics products and reporting environments end-to-end, including governance, lifecycle management, and partnering with technology teams for access controls and support.
• Design and develop deliverables based on the interpretation of findings and business client needs.
• Provide consultation to business clients and participate in cross-functional teams.
• Serve as a trusted, consultative partner to business clients, including senior leaders.
• Own benchmarking and external data participation to provide internal and industry context.
• Contribute to organizational growth by sharing results and insights across teams and with business clients.
• Identify and capture business requirements and develop KPI frameworks.
• Apply new perspectives, creative problem-solving, and inter-departmental connections to enhance analytical capabilities.
• Embrace continuous learning, curiosity, and ambiguity.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, Mathematics, Statistics, Business, or a related field.
• 4-5 years of professional experience in an analytics-related field.
• 3 years of hands-on analytics work experience.
• 5 years of progressively responsible experience in research and data analysis, statistical research techniques, or application development supporting business decisions.
• Expertise in analytical tools such as SAS, SQL, MS Excel, SPSS, R, or similar.
• Experience with visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau.
• Ability to access, gather, and analyze data from multiple internal and external sources to drive insights.
• Ability to articulate expertise at the department level and potentially at the enterprise level.
