Primary Function
The Online Hate and Extremism Analyst will be responsible for researching and analyzing the trends and tactics used by malicious actors to promote hate and false narratives online. This includes, but is not limited to, using tools to collect and analyze social and news media content, and assessing trends related to how extremist movements and groups are evolving in online spaces. The Online Hate and Extremism Analyst will develop and report findings to relevant agency staff and external partners and participate in planning and carrying out responses to research findings.
Primary Responsibilities
- Investigate how extremists use and are influenced by trending content, false narratives and emerging technologies like AI.
- Identify and analyze the impact of online hate on extremist activities.
- Identify and analyze how promoters of hate exploit social media, online games and other online services to harass communities, spread hateful narratives and evade content moderation.
- Gather information from a wide variety of sources, including traditional media, AI tools, social media, community run spaces and open-source intelligence.
- Help develop qualitative and quantitative analysis of subject area, potentially with the use of a range of technical tools.
- Develop background and briefing materials for agency staff and external partners, including law enforcement, via written reports and verbal presentations.
- Assist in planning and executing ADL responses to research findings.
- Produce reports, articles, letters, blogs and other materials, potentially in tandem with other analysts and subject matter experts across COE.
- Present findings to various internal and external audiences.
Secondary Responsibilities
- Respond to requests for information and research from staff, as well as various outside constituents and partners.
- Take on additional research projects.
Key Skills and Competencies
- Experience with social media listening tools and OSINT techniques and tools.
- Familiarity with research and analytical tools at-large, and ability and willingness to learn new technologies quickly.
- Established familiarity with issues related to propaganda, extremism and developments in the world of content moderation.
- Ability to switch between quantitative and qualitative analytical lenses.
- Ability to thrive in a demanding, fast-paced multi-tasking environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams.
- Excellent research skills, on traditional and online platforms.
- Excellent analytical and writing skills.
- Ability to demonstrate good judgment under pressure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Python or similar programming languages.
- Familiarity with AI benchmarking and testing.
Work Experience
Several years' experience with a demonstrable increase in skills and responsibility in advocacy or policy-oriented research environment, journalism, or social sciences research or equivalent experience required.
Education
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; graduate degree preferred.
Work Environment
ADL is a hybrid environment; this role will require 3 days in person.
Compensation
This position has a salary range of $65,000 to $75,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in (New York, NY). Please note that actual salaries are commensurate with experience and reflect the budget for a given position, and since ADL has a location-based compensation structure, there may be a different range for candidates in other locations.
