Job Description
Product Management, Research at Anthropic
At Anthropic, our mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems, ensuring AI is safe and beneficial for all. Our team comprises dedicated researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders collaboratively building beneficial AI systems.
As a Product Manager for the Research team, you will be instrumental in the ideation and deployment of new models and products as we advance frontier, safe AI technology. This role involves close collaboration with our research teams to productize credible applied research and identify high-potential use cases grounded in customer needs. We are looking for someone deeply passionate about developing safe and beneficial artificial intelligence technologies. You should thrive in ambiguous environments, uncovering latent and non-obvious use cases for nascent technologies, and bringing these insights back to research. Your curiosity about user needs will enable you to connect advanced technology to products that deliver real-world value.
We seek experienced founders and product managers who can bridge research and ambitious product experimentation, capable of creating and growing entirely new product categories enabled by AI.
Responsibilities
- Lead the vision, strategy, roadmap, and execution of frontier technologies that leverage the latest AI capabilities to solve real-world problems.
- Partner with research to define, improve, and ship model capabilities within a research area.
- Identify nascent research that could become transformative products.
- Synthesize user insights into actionable requirements and evaluations.
- Understand the AI landscape and ecosystem, ensuring an objective view of market capabilities and our position.
- Work with and influence a diverse set of stakeholders, including research, product engineering, and platform engineering teams.
You Might Be a Good Fit If You
- Have a deep passion and curiosity for AI and LLMs and use AI regularly.
- Have 5+ years in product management, with experience launching new products and scaling existing ones (founder background is a plus).
- Are a first-principles thinker with the ability to navigate and execute amidst ambiguity, flexing into different domains and finding simple, easy-to-understand solutions.
- Possess a deep technical background with a strong grasp of AI/ML concepts and are willing to go deep on technical solutions; have a data-driven mindset with working proficiency in Python and SQL.
- Have strong user empathy and the ability to synthesize vague or contradictory feedback into actionable priorities.
- Have a track record of launching ambitious products that have achieved distribution or commercial success.
- Have intellectual curiosity without ego—comfortable asking questions and learning independently.
- Think creatively about the risks and benefits of new technologies, moving beyond past checklists and playbooks.
- Have a creative, hacker spirit and love solving puzzles.
Annual Salary
$305,000—$385,000 USD
Logistics
- Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.
- Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
- Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
How We're Different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic, we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. We value impact—advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI—rather than working on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, akin to physics and biology, and are an extremely collaborative group. We host frequent research discussions to ensure we pursue the highest-impact work, greatly valuing communication skills. Our research directions are best understood by reading our recent work, which continues previous efforts on GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space to collaborate.
