System Development Engineer Internship at Amazon

Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit satellite network. Our mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet connectivity to customers beyond the reach of existing networks. From individual households to schools, hospitals, businesses, and government agencies, Amazon Leo will serve people and organizations operating in locations without reliable connectivity.

Amazon internships are full-time positions, and interns should expect to work in-office Monday-Friday, up to 40 hours per week typically between 8am-5pm. Specific team norms around working hours will be communicated by your manager. Interns should not have conflicts such as classes or other employment during the Amazon work-day.

Applicants should have a minimum of one quarter/semester/trimester remaining in their studies after their internship concludes. Your application will be considered for all System Development Engineer roles at all locations we hire for in the United States though majority of roles are based in the Greater Seattle Area (Seattle, Bellevue, Redmond).

You will be able to provide your preference of location and start date during the application process but, we cannot guarantee that we can meet your selection based on several factors including but not limited to the availability and business needs of this role. Finalization on the location and start dates available will be provided to you at the time of job offer.

Internship Start Dates

  • Summer (Starts May/June 2026)
  • Fall (Starts August/September 2026)

Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (i.e., current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Key Job Responsibilities

As a System Development Engineer Intern, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Create, improve, or invent tools and/or applications that are a part of a larger system.
  • Build and operate a supportable product or service, making significant technical contributions.
  • Write code that is secure, stable, testable, maintainable, and has minimal defects.
  • Understand a variety of technologies such as hardware, software, networking, and operating systems, and how they interact.
  • Build systems and processes that enable other builders through improved safety, agility, and automation.
  • Seek to learn the business context and technologies behind your team’s system implementations.

A Day in the Life

Our internship program provides hands-on learning and building experiences for students interested in a career in system engineering. In addition to working on an impactful project, you will have the opportunity to engage with Amazonians for both personal and professional development, expand your network, and participate in fun activities with other interns throughout the summer. No matter the location of your internship, we give you the tools to own your internship and learn in a real-world setting.

Basic Qualifications

  • Are 18 years of age or older.
  • Experience coding, scripting, automating in at least one language (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, Ruby, or PowerShell).
  • Ability to work 40 hours/week minimum and commit to a 12-week internship maximum.
  • Are enrolled in or have completed a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other related discipline.
  • An expected conferral date between October 2026 - September 2029.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with open-source technologies (e.g. Linux, Spring, React).
  • Experience with TCP/IP networking fundamentals and application of IP protocols such as: DNS, DHCP, NTP, SMTP, and SNMP.
  • Knowledge of computer science fundamentals such as object-oriented design, operating systems, algorithms, data structures, and complexity analysis.
  • Experience with distributed computing, programs, and systems.
  • Experience with automating and simplifying team development, test, and operations processes.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and effective communication abilities.
