Project Manager, Global Engineering Services Startup at Amazon

Amazon is actively seeking a highly experienced Project Manager to lead the continuous expansion of its European fulfillment network. The successful candidate will be adept at managing large, complex projects, overseeing a team of contracted support personnel, and coordinating both internal and external resources. This role is crucial for launching new, highly complex fulfillment centers, focusing on achieving timelines, adhering to budgets, and ensuring network standardization and consistency. Ideal candidates possess a strong background in managing extensive and intricate projects with ambitious scheduling demands. The individual must demonstrate leadership and mentorship capabilities for project resources, while also managing project engineers and specialists, and synchronizing schedules with multiple vendors concurrently. This position requires comfort in interfacing and driving various functional teams and individuals across all organizational levels to ensure successful project delivery.

This is an exceptional opportunity for individuals who desire to travel and work across diverse countries and cultures. The role is based in the UK, Germany, or Poland, involving approximately 50% travel time, both domestically and to other EU countries.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in both vendor and Amazon safety policies.
  • Execute detailed coordination of interdependent material flow and installation schedules from multiple vendors.
  • Manage the overall project budget, including approving all purchase orders and invoices.
  • Contribute to developing comprehensive budgets during the project conception phase.
  • Plan, direct, supervise, and control the execution of all business, technical, fiscal, and administrative functions for assigned programs, projects, or sub-tasks.
  • Demonstrate adaptability in various roles, sometimes providing support and sometimes leading.
  • Take accountability while providing status updates, requesting assistance, and escalating issues and problems promptly.
  • Act as the primary Company representative with vendors and suppliers during project execution.
  • Mobilize company resources through effective liaison with support departments to form project teams capable of delivering high-quality work.
  • Monitor and report on the progress of all project activities, including significant milestones and any conditions affecting project cost or schedule.
  • Be responsible for the overall project schedule, ensuring teams can achieve project milestones and Go-Live dates.
  • Utilize experience in a distribution environment and knowledge of material handling equipment such as pallet racking, conveyor systems, and fork trucks.
  • Possess a broad technical background with the ability to actively participate and manage when necessary.
  • Contribute to project planning from initial concept through to completion.

A Day in the Life

As a Project Manager, Global Engineering Services Startup, you will plan and execute business cases to deliver operational fulfillment centers. Your day might involve engaging with various organizational levels to establish strategy, visiting sites to oversee development from greenfield to fully functioning FCs, and planning and managing resources to execute activities detailed in an end-to-end schedule. You will make critical business decisions and witness their fruition through effective coordination of internal and third-party stakeholders, culminating in the successful launch of facilities – a true 'Day One' for all involved!

The EU Startup team comprises a talented group of project and program managers dedicated to coordinating all activities required to safely build highly complex FCs to network standards across the EU market. Our team values work-life balance and is committed to developing and supporting new team members. This environment enables Project Managers to execute challenging timelines and manage frugal budgets to deliver new build, expansion, and retrofit projects driven by capacity and inventory needs, ultimately optimizing the Amazon Fulfillment network.

Basic Qualifications

  • Experience developing and managing large project budgets.
  • Proven experience in project management and implementation, including designing workable solutions and driving projects to successful implementation.
  • Advanced proficiency in verbal and written English.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products: Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and MS Project.
  • Basic working experience with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, Solid Works, or other).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior success in driving the execution of large-scale project plans with multiple teams to support business goals.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced, rapidly changing operations environment.
  • Ability to effectively manage, influence, negotiate, and communicate with external business partners and internal teams to meet organizational capacity needs.
  • Experience in launching new logistics centers, factories, or large facilities (including equipment deployment and management of all related processes).
  • Certified Project Management qualification (PMP, Prince2, or other).
  • Advanced CAD skills.
  • Experience in the Automation and Robotics industry and/or an academic background in a related field.
  • Proficiency in German, French, Polish, Arabic, Portuguese, Turkish, Afrikaans, and Zulu are considered preferred qualifications.
