Job Description
Role Summary
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is launching the inaugural European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) and is seeking experienced systems engineers with strong backgrounds in automation and operations. As a member of the AWS Managed Operations team, you will be crucial in building and leading operations and development teams. Your focus will be on delivering highly available AWS services, including EC2, S3, Dynamo, Lambda, and Bedrock, exclusively for EU customers. More details on ESC can be found on the AWS blog.
You will oversee the launch of the ESC in 2025, collaborate with global AWS teams, and influence the evolution of AWS services and technology. A typical day involves engaging with technology leaders, enhancing day-to-day operations, and improving the availability, reliability, latency, performance, and efficiency of the ESC. Occasional participation in “on-call” rotations for out-of-hours incident resolution is required.

About the European Sovereign Cloud
The European Sovereign Cloud (ESC) is an integral part of AWS Utility Computing (UC).
AWS Utility Computing (UC) drives product innovations, from foundational services like Amazon’s Simple Storage Service (S3) and Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) to consistently released new features that distinguish AWS in the industry. As part of the UC organization, you will support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services. Within AWS UC, Managed Operations engineers engage with customers who require specialized security solutions for their cloud services.
A Day in the Life
Your week will be dedicated to meaningful contributions to the operation and improvement of significant software systems. You will spend substantial time reviewing the operational health of services, identifying anomalies, and crafting actionable bug reports to enhance system efficiency and performance.
Additionally, you will provide constructive feedback on change management documents and address your team's operational backlog. Through collaborative efforts, you will navigate challenges to ensure seamless system functionality. You will also develop and test scripts to enhance workflows.
Beyond technical tasks, you will educate service teams on the complexities of the European Sovereign Cloud, contributing to the collective knowledge and fostering mutual understanding within the team.
This role embodies a commitment to continuous learning and improvement, recognizing that every effort contributes to the collective success of your team and the reliability of your software systems. You will also have 24x7 on-call responsibility, working as a team to root-cause issues and ensure system resilience and fault tolerance, maintaining operational excellence.
Eligibility Requirements
- Fluency in written and spoken English is required.
- Candidate must be a national of an EU member state and residing in the EU to operate the AWS European Sovereign Cloud.
- Amazon will provide relocation support for successful applicants relocating within the European Union.
- Employees will participate in an On-Call rota.
Basic Qualifications
- This role requires you to be a national of an EU member state.
- Demonstrated expertise in systems engineering working with hardware, software, networking, operating systems.
- Experience scripting processes in a language such as Bash, Python, or Ruby.
- Solid understanding of Linux and networking, and able to troubleshoot and anticipate problems that affect the performance, reliability, or availability of software systems.
- Able to lead the creation, revision, and/or improvement of standard operational procedures (SOPs) and driving operational best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with monitoring frameworks (such as CloudWatch, Datadog, Grafana, Elastic or similar).
- Experience actively mentoring junior engineers and working cross-organizationally and leading strategic team efforts requiring work from multiple team members.
- Experience supporting service in AWS or other cloud systems or services.
- Experience operating 24x7 high-availability, distributed software applications and performance tuning software applications and optimizing fleet utilization.
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code, (such as CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
