Job Description

About the Role: Senior Technical Program Manager, Software

We are seeking a Senior Technical Program Manager to bolster our software development initiatives. This role involves close collaboration with technical leads to strategize and execute a continuous flow of smaller projects. These projects are crucial for building out software and developing automation capabilities vital for the fabrication and operation of our quantum hardware. While these projects do not directly involve the quantum hardware, their focus is on driving efficiency and accelerating hardware development. The position thrives in an environment characterized by a high degree of ambiguity, where project scope and deliverables are often fluid. A successful candidate will navigate these challenges, create detailed plans, and negotiate resources across a matrixed organization. The diverse nature of these projects offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain deep familiarity with all facets of hardware development and testing for quantum computing, requiring strong multitasking abilities and an innate curiosity.

You will collaborate with other Technical Program Managers and cross-functional teams to identify and resolve resource conflicts. Leveraging your extensive experience in managing complex technical programs, you will make data-informed decisions at a programmatic level. This role also involves defining technical project management standards across the AWS Center for Quantum Computing. As an experienced project manager, you will contribute to shaping general project management practices organization-wide, improving lifecycle approaches, and enhancing project visibility for teams and senior leadership. Familiarity with system engineering topics such as quantitative risk management, reviews, and requirements management is highly desirable.

AWS Utility Computing (UC) drives product innovations, from foundational services like Amazon S3 and EC2, to continuously released new features that distinguish AWS in the industry. As part of the UC organization, you will support the development and management of Compute, Database, Storage, Internet of Things (IoT), Platform, and Productivity Apps services, including specialized security solutions for cloud customers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities where in-house developed software can streamline internal hardware and software workflows.
  • Develop requirement documents that translate customer needs into workable software solutions.
  • Collaborate with software managers to develop plans, including identifying resources, for internal software platforms.
  • Support the internal roll-out and adoption of these new tools.
  • Compile customer feedback to drive incremental improvements for existing software tools.

About The Team

The AWS Center for Quantum Computing is a multi-disciplinary group of scientists, engineers, and technicians dedicated to developing a universal fault-tolerant quantum computer. Our organization pursues ambitious goals while prioritizing work-life balance, personal growth, and a culture of knowledge sharing and mentorship.

Export Control Requirement: Due to applicable export control laws and regulations, candidates must be either a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum, or be able to obtain a U.S. export license.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of technical program management experience, working directly with software engineering teams.
  • Experience leading highly technical programs involving infrastructure, complex systems, or systems engineering.
  • Experience in project management disciplines including scope, schedule, budget, quality, along with risk and critical path management.
  • 5+ years of experience interfacing with software/hardware teams in an academic or R&D environment.
  • Experience communicating effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's or PhD in a relevant field (computer science, math, physics, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to implement both agile and traditional ‘waterfall’ project management practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to dive deep in at least one engineering domain other than software.
  • Experience in applying machine learning and AI tools to improve or automate design, production, or testing processes in an industrial context.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based architectures, ideally on Amazon Web Services.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Familiarity with the layers of the quantum computing stack and the quantum devices lifecycle.
