Job Description

About the Role of a Principal Technical Product Manager, External Services

We are actively shaping the future of cloud development, making AWS the most agent-friendly cloud provider. The AWS Developer Tools organization is revolutionizing how developers and AI agents interact with AWS through innovative services, including Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and agent-native interfaces that facilitate seamless software development.

As a Principal Technical Product Manager, External Services, you will be responsible for the product strategy and execution concerning how AI agents interface with AWS services. Your immediate focus will be on Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers and other agent-native interface patterns, where you will define and drive the evolution of these interfaces as technology progresses. This role involves determining how millions of developers and AI agents will discover, authenticate with, and utilize AWS services through standardized interfaces.

You will establish the vision for making AWS services accessible to AI agents, define governing standards for service teams to build agent-friendly interfaces, and oversee the measurement and continuous improvement of the agent experience across AWS. Your work will involve evaluating emerging protocols and interface patterns to strategically decide when to adopt, extend, or replace existing approaches, ensuring AWS's leadership in agent-native computing. This position operates at the nexus of AI, developer experience, and cloud infrastructure, pioneering the next generation of agent-native cloud computing.

Collaboration is key, as you will work with engineering teams, applied scientists, and AWS service teams company-wide to ensure agent interfaces adhere to best practices, deliver tangible customer value, and create cohesive experiences for both traditional developers and AI agents. This role demands a deep technical understanding of AI agents, developer tools, and AWS services, coupled with the ability to influence effectively across a large, distributed organization.

If you are passionate about enabling the agentic future of software development and excited to define how AI agents interact with cloud infrastructure, this role offers a unique opportunity to shape AWS's agent-first strategy.

Key Responsibilities of a Principal Technical Product Manager, External Services

  • Define the product vision for agent-native AWS experiences, encompassing service discovery, well-architected decision-making, and automated infrastructure management.
  • Establish product strategy and roadmap for agent-native interfaces to AWS services, with a current emphasis on MCP servers and other emerging interface patterns, including the responsibility for identifying and driving next-generation approaches.
  • Create security, design, and implementation standards that empower service teams to develop agent-friendly interfaces across current and future protocols.
  • Oversee the measurement and continuous improvement of the agent experience, including instrumentation, metrics, and feedback loops that drive product iteration and inform interface evolution.
  • Build evaluation frameworks and benchmarking systems to measure agent effectiveness, interface performance, and developer experience across multiple integration patterns.
  • Drive cross-functional initiatives with AWS service teams to expand agent-friendly capabilities across AWS services and create seamless agent workflows.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to prioritize features, resolve technical tradeoffs, and ensure operational excellence for agent interfaces.
  • Engage with customers and gather feedback to validate use cases, identify pain points, and iterate on capabilities.
  • Communicate product vision, strategy, and progress to senior leadership, demonstrating how agent-native interfaces accelerate customer innovation.
  • Represent AWS in the broader community, collaborating with open-source contributors and industry partners to shape protocol evolution.

Basic Qualifications

  • 7+ years of experience working as a Technical Product Manager.
  • 5+ years of technical experience (software development, network development, IT, or other related fields).
  • Experience delivering large-scale SaaS, PaaS, or IaaS products, where you were responsible for the full product lifecycle, from concept through Go-to-Market (GTM).
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Experience defining product strategy for developer-facing tools with significant adoption.
  • Deep understanding of AI agents, large language models, and agentic workflows.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority across large, distributed organizations.
  • Experience working with engineering teams, applied scientists, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience presenting to senior leadership and external customers.
  • Understanding of cloud computing platforms, APIs, and the software development lifecycle.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with Model Context Protocol (MCP), AI agent frameworks, or other agent-enabling interface technologies.
  • Understanding of emerging agent interface patterns and protocol evolution in the AI/ML space.
  • Background in developer experience optimization with a focus on API design, SDK development, or developer tools.
  • Understanding of AWS services, infrastructure as code, and cloud deployment patterns.
  • Experience building evaluation frameworks or benchmarking systems for developer tools or AI systems.
