About the Role: Associate Systems Engineer at Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Our Region Services team redefines the way AWS designs, builds, and operates AWS regions to enable new AWS Cloud Infrastructure and Services offerings to customers across every industry and of every size, including start-ups, enterprises, and public sector organizations.
Key Responsibilities
As an Associate Systems Engineer with AWS, you will immerse yourself in understanding the root cause of customer issues, investigate metric anomalies, and collaborate with senior engineers. We are dedicated to owning our services and ensuring out-of-hours support is seamless by implementing Operational Excellence best practices and striving for automation of manual processes.
You will develop a broad range of skills, utilizing your Linux expertise for troubleshooting, innovating fixes and workarounds, maintaining software, and providing data for capacity and efficiency management. Your networking knowledge will be crucial for identifying and resolving connectivity issues. Clear communication and collaboration are essential for delivering results. We are looking for self-starters who are comfortable with ambiguity and change, and who are customer-obsessed, always seeking to understand and resolve customer pain points quickly and completely.

A Day in the Life
A typical day involves operating and enhancing one of our major software systems. You will regularly review the operational health of your team's services, identify anomalies, and create actionable bug reports. Responsible engineering means executing production changes with a robust plan, following established change management processes. You will also contribute to resolving the team's backlog of operational issues. Expect to innovate, perhaps by writing a script that accelerates root cause analysis for complex problems. Occasional participation in "on-call" rotations to resolve incidents outside of standard hours will be required.

The Region Services team delivers top-tier Operational Solutions and Cleared Support for services within our Regions. We provide "hands-on-keyboard" support to our service teams by deploying changes into isolated regions, monitoring outcomes, and reporting any observed issues.

Basic Qualifications
- 1+ years of experience with Linux, including command line and basic administration, and computer networking fundamentals.
- 1+ years of experience troubleshooting operations for highly scalable Linux systems running a variety of back-end micro-service applications.
- Knowledge of scripting in languages such as Bash, Python, or Ruby, with a focus on automation and solving systems issues.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Proficient in troubleshooting and anticipating problems affecting software system performance, reliability, or availability.
- 1+ years of operations experience with CI/CD Pipelines and deployment systems (e.g., Terraform, GitHub Actions, Jenkins).
- Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., CDK, CloudFormation, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, or similar).
