HSE & Compliance Manager, Global Food Business at ALS
At ALS, you'll be part of a global team harnessing scientific testing and data-driven insights to build a healthier future. As the HSE & Compliance Manager, Global Food Business, you will be instrumental in leading health, safety, and environmental initiatives across our worldwide Food operations. Reporting to the General Manager and aligning with the Group Health & Safety Director, you will coordinate HSE programs, support corporate compliance and sustainability goals, and liaise with regulatory authorities as needed. This pivotal role involves guiding the global HSE strategy for the Food business, leading the dedicated Food HSE Group, and overseeing continuous performance improvement efforts, with indirect alignment to regional HSE leaders globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify, recommend, and implement the overall strategic direction, planning, and organization of ALS Food Business HSE priorities.
- Coordinate and communicate ALS and Food HSE Compliance and Sustainability responsibilities among global HSE Food resources.
- Support the Food Business when engaging with governmental regulatory entities as required.
- Review and report on Global HSE performance monthly.
- Develop and support best practice principles to enhance consistency across global HSE programs and tools.
- Assess, interpret, and implement all requirements of the HSE Management System and regulations across all ALS Food business locations.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulatory needs.
- Enforce ALS and Food HSE standards, identify, and monitor corrective actions to ensure compliance.
- Support an HSE culture of reporting, review, and continual improvement through corrective actions.
- Lead the Global Food team to develop and support corporate initiatives and programs.
- Focus on Injury Management, monitor, and support incidents within the business, including investigations aligned with country and ALS Policy and Standards.
- Develop programs to reduce high-risk elements through Life Saving Rules and review of incident trends.
- Review and report on PPI program metrics and globally support compliance.
- Manage and participate in global HSE audits.
- Manage and maintain global HSE risk identification, program controls, and monitoring programs.
- Engage in Sustainability activities related to corporate objectives and their adaptation to the Food Business.
- Ensure appropriate mandatory training (Induction, specialty roles, refresher).
- Observe established HSE regulations, best practices, and comply with all ALS Group Health and Safety standards, policies, procedures, and tools.
- Maintain compliance with ALS Loss Control requirements.
- Assess Food operations physical security requirements to protect assets.
- Assess medical, security, and safety travel risks, making recommendations to minimize risk for global Food operations.
- Lead Food field and vehicle safety program requirements.
- Implement, test, and improve the HSE aspects associated with site emergency response and business continuity programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
About You
The ideal candidate will possess a strong level of expertise in health, safety, and environment, complemented by excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills. You must demonstrate the ability to handle confidential information, exhibit strong organizational skills with thorough follow-through, and project a positive, professional image. Tact and communication skills are essential for effective engagement with agencies and government bodies. Furthermore, a proven track record of sound judgment, creativity, integrity, and problem-solving abilities is required. Fluency in English, both written and verbal, is mandatory.
Required Qualifications
- Completion of a university degree, College level, or Institutional Occupational Health and Safety Program or equivalent is desired.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressively increasing responsibility for Health and Safety outcomes and program conception/implementation.
- Minimum of 3 years of management experience.
- Multilingual preferred (Spanish, Portuguese), however business operations are primarily conducted in English.
Physical Demands & Working Environment
- Ability to travel up to 30% of time when required.
- Manual dexterity for intricate and/or repetitive tasks.
- Wear issued personal protective equipment (PPE), when required.
- Ability to stand for a full shift.
- Ability to sit at a desk and perform general office work, including periodic sedentary responsibilities.
- Ability to communicate via telephone and email without assistance.
