Job Description

Nurse Practitioner Physician Assistant - Neuro ICU

Albany Med Health System is seeking dedicated Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to join our Neurology General department within the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit (Neuro ICU). This is a full-time Day shift position.

About the Role

As an APP in the Neurosciences ICU, you will work collaboratively with specialty neurointensivists and critical care nurses to provide top-tier care to critically ill neurological patients. Our team manages patients with a wide spectrum of severe neurological conditions, including major strokes, brain hemorrhages, inflammatory and infectious diseases, refractory seizures, and severe neuromuscular disease complications.

You will be an integral part of a multidisciplinary team, coordinating care with neurointensivists, neurosurgeons, case management, social work, and various therapy services (physical, occupational, speech-language). Your responsibilities will include:

  • Performing daily patient assessments and physical examinations.
  • Reviewing and interpreting patient data.
  • Liaising with consultative services.
  • Participating in daily teaching rounds.
  • Executing patient care plans.

The Neurosciences ICU APP is trained in advanced life support protocols, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS). You will gain experience in managing brain codes, refractory seizures, ventilator management, critical care medicine principles, performing transcranial Doppler and bedside ultrasound, and placing central venous catheters and arterial lines.

We provide a comprehensive orientation period and ongoing educational opportunities within the Department of Neurology and the Division of Neurocritical Care.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner Master’s degree program.
  • Current NYS licensure, Board Certified, and DEA registration.
  • Possess or obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) issued by the US Center for Medicaid and Medicare services.
  • Excellent verbal, writing, and interpersonal skills.
  • Professional demeanor and integrity.

Physical Demands

This role requires frequent standing, walking, lifting, carrying, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions, with constant eye/hand/foot coordination. Occasional to frequent stooping, kneeling, and crouching are also necessary.

Working Conditions

The work environment includes constant noise and frequent hazards. Other conditions are rarely encountered.
