About the role

Java Software Engineer / Legacy Modernization

(Java Spring Batch on AWS)

Engagement Type: Contract, 5-month initial term with potential extension

Location: Remote (US hours); NC onsite a plus, not required

Start: Immediate / target within 2 weeks of selection

About the Role

Our client, a major US financial services enterprise, is modernizing a portfolio of legacy batch applications. You will rewrite existing KSH shell scripts, Perl programs, and PL/SQL code into Java Spring Batch jobs running on AWS Batch, and deploy them to production through the client's established CI/CD pipeline.

This is execution-focused, hands-on-keyboard engineering. Work is inventoried and ticketed in Jira: pull a ticket, translate the legacy logic faithfully into the target stack, test it, and ship it. There is minimal greenfield design work, we need engineers who take pride in clean, correct, high-throughput delivery.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze legacy KSH, Perl, and PL/SQL code to understand existing business logic and data flows.
  • Rewrite legacy jobs as Java Spring Batch applications targeting AWS Batch.
  • Write and maintain SQL as part of the migration work.
  • Deploy code to production using Jenkins, Terraform, and uDeploy (the client's CI/CD stack)
  • Work ticket by ticket from a defined Jira backlog, providing accurate estimates and status.
  • Validate migrated jobs against legacy behavior to ensure functional equivalence.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong Java development experience, including Spring and specifically Spring Batch.
  • Hands-on AWS experience, with AWS Batch experience strongly preferred.
  • Ability to read and reverse-engineer legacy code: Unix shell scripting (KSH or similar), Perl, and PL/SQL.
  • Solid SQL skills.
  • Experience deploying through Jenkins and Terraform pipelines.
  • Proven ability to write production code independently, without AI coding assistants, the client environment prohibits AI tooling.
  • Comfortable in a ticket-driven delivery model with tight timelines.

Nice to Have

  • uDeploy (IBM UrbanCode Deploy) experience.
  • Prior work in regulated financial services environments.
  • Experience with large-scale batch processing and job scheduling.

Important Notes

  • AI coding tools (Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.) are strictly prohibited in the client environment; candidates will be evaluated on unassisted coding ability.
  • Client onboarding and background checks begin immediately upon selection and can take several weeks, early engagement in the process is expected.
