About the Role: Traveling Field Engineer at AFL
The Traveling Field Engineer at AFL is a crucial role focused on providing expert on-site implementation and troubleshooting for customer network operations centers, POPs, or labs. This position involves active participation in network verification activities, turn-up of Ribbon-based Packet Optical Networks, and subsequent day-to-day fault management support. You will collaborate closely with customer personnel to integrate and implement new network elements and ensure seamless operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support optical and data link provisioning.
- Provide on-site fault management for the network.
- Perform physical installations, including racking and stacking.
- Conduct commissioning and solution testing (ATP, BERT).
- Execute network optical tune-up and calibration.
- Install new software releases and updates.
- Offer informal customer training and support self-sufficiency plans.
- Provide technical escalation support for complex issues.
Requirements & Qualifications
This role demands direct interaction with customers, peers, engineering, and sales teams. Candidates must possess in-depth troubleshooting techniques and fault isolation skills, along with hands-on knowledge of packet optical networking technologies and typical client-side interfaces. Experience with industry-standard test equipment (Ge, 10G, 100G, 400G, SONET, SDH TDM) is essential. The ability to autonomously recreate and isolate customer issues while collaborating with peers is critical.
Desirable qualifications include:
- Knowledge of optical DWDM, flex-grid ROADMs, ASON, Layer 2 Ethernet, Layer 3 IP-MPLS, MPLS-TP, and Network Management platforms.
- Experience with ASON, Unix, Linux, and SDN technologies.
- Proven ability to build and maintain strong customer service relationships.
- Capacity to lead and drive problem resolution in a timely manner.
- Skill in documenting issues and producing reports for customers and management.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Capability to produce technical documentation.
- Flexibility to work varied hours and travel nationally at short notice.
- A valid driving license.
