Insurance Regulatory Counsel, Assistant General Counsel at Aegon

Consult with and advise a financial services organization on appropriate legal action. This role is responsible for assigned practice area(s), which will include management responsibilities for attorneys and paralegals, along with budget oversight. The Insurance Regulatory Counsel, Assistant General Counsel will provide legal oversight of various business units and will be a key member of the divisional Legal leadership team.

Responsibilities

  • Manage legal counsel and advice provided to several in-house constituents, including senior management, within practice areas such as Life Insurance, Health Insurance, and Employee Benefits.
  • Identify gaps in corporate policies related to legal issues and provide expert advice on how to close those gaps effectively.
  • Work on complex problems where analysis requires the identification and evaluation of multiple factors that impact significant areas of the company.
  • Advise business and team members on issues impacting significant functional areas of the company, including Operations, Product Development, Actuarial, Compliance, Distribution, Underwriting, Call Centers, Policy Administration, Claims, Agent Contracting, Licensing & Appointments, Complaint Handling, Form Filings, SEC Product Registrations, and Regulatory Exams.
  • Represent Aegon before, and interact with, federal, state, and SRO regulators.
  • Negotiate difficult disputes that may have serious impacts on the company's operations and reputation.
  • Identify areas where new documents, templates, or processes are necessary to enhance legal efficiency and compliance.
  • Manage legal matters handled by outside counsel, including selecting counsel from pre-selected lists or engaging new outside counsel as needed.
  • Take budgetary responsibility for specific cost center(s) and assist with departmental budgeting and cost control initiatives.
  • Manage and train other/junior attorneys within assigned practice area(s), fostering their professional development.
  • Primarily work with independent judgment, consulting with more senior attorneys and colleagues as needed for complex situations.
  • Identify needs for, participate in, and lead departmental and cross-functional working groups in identified areas of expertise or development, engaging with the most senior levels of company leadership.
  • Review complex legal documents and agreements, providing critical input and insight.
  • Contribute to leadership competencies for the legal department.
  • Manage data privacy risks and ensure compliance with company policy regarding the processing of personal and/or other sensitive data.
  • Collaborate extensively with business clients, Legal, Compliance, and Risk colleagues to achieve company objectives.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • At least ten years of relevant legal experience.
  • Licensed or eligible to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrates exceptional emotional intelligence and resilience, effectively leading and navigating complex, ambiguous, and high-stakes situations with sound judgment and professionalism.
  • Ability to exercise agility and adaptability in providing legal advice within a rapidly changing corporate environment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both written and oral, with the intended audience and all levels of the organization.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience providing legal advice to Life insurance Products and Distribution businesses is required.
  • Health insurance/Supplemental Products (Group Life) legal experience is a significant plus.

Working Conditions

This is a hybrid office environment role, requiring 3 days per week in one of the following locations: Baltimore, Cedar Rapids, Denver, or Philadelphia.
