Trades Specialist (Electrician)
The New York State Office of Mental Health is seeking a skilled Trades Specialist (Electrician) for the Buffalo Psychiatric Center.
Duties Description
As a Trades Specialist (Electrician), you will be responsible for all electrical work, including planning, laying out work, and diagnosing electrical system or equipment issues within an assigned area, project, or the entire facility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform journeyman-level electrical duties.
- Repair, maintain, and install electrical systems and equipment, including fixtures, motors, load centers, relays, controls, and circuitry, in compliance with the National Electrical Code.
- Diagnose electrical malfunctions using test instruments like ammeters, voltmeters, and ohmmeters.
- Plan new installations or modifications according to specifications and national electrical codes.
- Develop time and material lists for assigned projects.
- Read and interpret plans, codes, diagrams, architectural blueprints, and specifications.
- Test, adjust, calibrate, and maintain various control equipment for HVAC, refrigeration, and other systems.
- Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on mechanical equipment such as exhaust fans, dryers, sump pumps, and generators.
- Train and supervise others.
- Work at heights using ladders, scaffolding, and mechanical lifts.
Job Requirements:
- Working knowledge of electrical trade methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
- Familiarity with applicable standards and electrical code regulations.
- Understanding of facility rules for state wards.
- Proficiency in using electrical trade tools and equipment.
- Ability to train and supervise.
- Skills in planning, laying out work, and diagnosing problems.
- Ability to interpret electrical plans, diagrams, and blueprints.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Minimum Qualifications:
Trades Specialist (Electrician): Four years of full-time experience in the electrical trade under a skilled tradesperson, or an equivalent combination of experience and technical coursework. Successful completion of a recognized electrician training program or apprenticeship is also acceptable.
Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 1: Full-time permanent service in a position at Grade 12 or below primarily engaged in labor and trades tasks; must be 18 years or older; possess a High School diploma or GED; and be proficient in English and math.
Trades Specialist (Electrician) Trainee 2: Successful completion of a 52-week probationary period as a Trainee 1, or specific coursework and on-the-job training hours in electrical work and blueprint reading. Trainees must maintain a “C” or better average in coursework.
A valid New York State driver's license may be required.
