Position Scope and Organizational Impact
Moss’ Tax Accountant will be responsible for coordinating with the company’s external CPA firm for the preparation of federal and state tax returns. The Tax Accountant will assist with maintaining compliance with ever-changing construction-related tax laws and supporting strategic tax planning. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of federal tax law specific to the construction industry, sales and use tax compliance and research, and state nexus rules. This role offers flexibility to be structured as either part-time or full-time depending on the candidate’s availability and business needs.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Act as the liaison with the company’s external CPA firm for the preparation of federal, state and local income tax returns. This will include providing information to the firm, participating in meetings, tracking progress and deadlines as well reviewing the returns
- Prepare and file certain returns that are not filed by the CPA firm
- Prepare and file multi-state sales and use tax returns (monthly, quarterly, and annual)
- Research and interpret sales and use tax laws in multiple states, including nexus determinations, exemption rules, and construction-specific applications
- Educate staff on the sales tax laws in various states including what documents to provide to vendors and owners
- Advise management on the sales tax implications of construction contracts, materials purchases, equipment, and capital expenditures
- Monitor tax law changes and assess their impact on the company’s operations
- Maintain compliance with multi-state tax nexus and reporting requirements
- Assist with quarterly and annual tax forecasts, reconciliations, and supporting schedules
- Manage tax audits and respond to inquiries from tax authorities
- Partner with the Controller and CFO on tax strategy, planning, and cash flow optimization
- Ensure accurate recordkeeping of tax filings, payments, and supporting documentation
- Support year-end close and collaborate with external auditors and tax advisors as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
Education and Work Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA or EA preferred)
- 3+ years of experience in tax accounting, preferably in construction or a multi-state environment
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax compliance
- Direct experience with sales and use tax compliance in a multi-state environment is required, including return preparation and research
- Familiarity with construction industry accounting and job costing (a plus)
- Familiarity with solar industry a plus
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with team members
