About the Role
MongoDB is seeking a Senior Forward Deployed AI Engineer to join a new team within its extended R&D organization. This role bridges application modernization efforts with Product and Engineering teams, focusing on the application of Generative AI to accelerate these transformations. We are looking for candidates based in Dublin for our hybrid working model. Organizations often face challenges with legacy applications, including scalability, resilience, long development times, high operating costs, and cloud incompatibility. Application modernization programs address these issues by migrating workloads to new platforms, often using microservices and MongoDB. Forward Deployed Engineers will explore Generative AI's potential to speed up these transformations, providing critical feedback to MongoDB's R&D teams to shape future product capabilities. Application Modernization Engineers will collaborate with customer project teams on modernization initiatives. Key responsibilities include evaluating, building, and applying tools; facilitating tool usage across teams; identifying deployment opportunities; selecting third-party tools; contributing to tooling prototypes; and influencing the product roadmap.Ideal Candidate Profile
- 4+ years of experience as a field engineer, professional services consultant, or full-stack developer with enterprise clients.
- Proficiency in Java or C#, with familiarity in common database access patterns and frameworks.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise-scale software architectures, application development methodologies, and software deployment/operations.
- Experience developing enterprise applications with relational databases (Oracle, MS SQL Server, Sybase, PostgreSQL) using SQL and stored procedures.
- Experience with MongoDB and JSON-based Document models is highly desirable.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate across disciplines.
- Willingness to dive into complex domains, ask critical questions, and introduce new technologies to solve customer problems.
- Strong communication skills (spoken and written) for team and customer interactions.
- Good understanding of Generative AI concepts, tools, and services. Experience building applications/tools with Generative AI (Cursor, Claude Code, Gemini, OpenAI APIs) is a significant plus.
- A strong interest in how AI-supported toolchains can enhance application development.
Position Expectations
- Contribute to all phases of customer application modernization initiatives: assessment, planning, design, data modeling, code conversion, testing, build, integration, release configuration, production operations, optimization, and best practices.
- Test MongoDB migration products to validate customer use cases and provide concise feedback to the development organization.
- Collaborate closely with Product and Engineering teams to influence the MongoDB product roadmap.
- Execute Proofs of Concept (POCs), potentially developing or extending existing tools for customer success and reusability.
- Maintain a deep technical understanding of MongoDB products and underlying technologies.
- Work within a wider delivery team including Professional Services engineers, project managers, and account teams.
- Assist sales teams in evaluating opportunities with prospects and customers.
- Be willing to work on-site with customers for up to 7 days per month, including regional travel within Europe.
