Mechanical Construction Estimating Manager
Position Overview
The Estimating Manager will lead the estimating team for mechanical construction projects, delivering accurate, competitive cost estimates and supporting bid strategy across commercial and industrial work. This role oversees estimate development, ensures compliance with client requirements and internal standards, and partners with project management, operations, and procurement to optimize costs and margins while maintaining schedule and quality objectives.Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor, and manage a team of estimators to produce timely, accurate, and competitive estimates for mechanical construction projects.
- Oversee the full estimating lifecycle: takeoffs, quantity development, pricing, subcontractor scopes, and proposal preparation.
- Review and validate detailed estimates, assumptions, risk registers, and contingency recommendations to ensure accuracy and profitability.
- Collaborate with business development and operations to develop bid/no-bid recommendations, pricing strategies, and value-engineering options.
- Maintain and improve estimating standards, templates, historical cost databases, and estimating tools to increase efficiency and consistency.
- Coordinate with procurement and subcontractors to solicit and evaluate subcontractor proposals and vendor quotes.
- Analyze project drawings, specifications, and site conditions; identify constructability issues and coordinate clarifications with engineering and design teams.
- Prepare executive summaries, estimate reports, and present bid results and recommendations to senior leadership and stakeholders.
- Monitor market conditions, material price trends, and labor rates to ensure estimates reflect current costs and risks.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in estimating processes, training, and knowledge sharing across the organization.
Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressive estimating experience in mechanical construction or MEP contracting, including responsibility for large or complex project estimates.
- 3+ years of supervisory or management experience leading estimating teams.
- Proven estimator skills with hands-on experience in takeoffs, unit pricing, subcontractor scope development, and proposal assembly.
- Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, piping, HVAC, and related construction methods and materials.
- Proficiency with estimating software and tools such as Sage Estimating, Trimble/WinEst, On-Screen Takeoff, Bluebeam, or equivalent; experience with BIM and Revit is a plus.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and attention-to-detail skills with strong financial acumen and understanding of cost drivers.
- Effective communication and presentation skills; ability to interact with clients, subcontractors, and internal teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced bidding environment and meet tight deadlines.
- Valid driver's license and ability to visit project sites and vendor facilities as required.
