About the role
About Backflip
Backflip is a venture-backed FinTech committed to becoming the leader in residential real estate investment financing. Our vision is to increase people's love for their communities by investing in housing and improving the physical world. To do that, we need people who are inspired to modernize real estate investing by connecting entrepreneurs with sophisticated capital. Backflip's capital product menu consists of fix and flip financing (RTL), single family rental loans (DSCR), and Ground-Up Construction.
About The Role
The Software Engineer is a hands-on, full-stack individual contributor responsible for building and shipping features across our product and for owning the integrations and backend services the business runs on. This is an execution-driven role for a builder: you'll own real surface area, ship production software end-to-end, and treat reliability as part of the job. It is not a management or architecture-first role — it's for an engineer who wants to build and be accountable for results.
This position reports to the Head of Engineering and offers the opportunity to grow ownership and surface area quickly on a small, high-leverage team. This is a remote role, with a preference for candidates located in Austin, TX, and occasional travel required (company offsites, etc.).
What You'll Do
- Design, build, and ship features end-to-end across a TypeScript/React frontend and a Typescript/Python backend.
- Own and extend integrations and backend services (LoanPro, HubSpot, internal APIs), and be the accountable owner for at least one as you ramp.
- Add tests, monitoring, and instrumentation to raise reliability and catch issues before customers do.
- Investigate and resolve production issues, driving down recurring errors over time.
- Participate in code review, design discussions, and planning, communicating proactively in a Slack-first team.
- Use AI coding tools and automation to work faster and reduce manual, repetitive work.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production software.
- Strong full-stack ability with a backend lean, hands-on with TypeScript/React and Python.
- Demonstrated experience owning services, APIs, or integrations end-to-end.
- A working discipline around testing, monitoring, and reliability.
- Experience at an early-stage startup (seed/Series A–B) is a strong plus.
- Hands-on experience building with LLMs or AI tooling is a strong plus.
- Comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-growth environment where priorities shift and processes evolve.
- 1+ year of experience working in a remote or distributed environment is preferred.
- Self-directed, accountable, and proactive — thrives where the playbook is still being written.
What Success Looks Like
- You ship your first production change in week one and are independently delivering features end-to-end within 90 days.
- You take full, accountable ownership of at least one integration or backend service.
- Your areas are measurably among the most reliable we run — well-tested, well-monitored, and low-noise.
- You adopt AI into your workflow and are eager to find tech-forward ways to gain efficiency and reduce manual work.
