Job Overview
HDR is looking for a Trenchless Engineer to join our national Trenchless Services team. This role will provide significant opportunity for professional growth and development. The Trenchless Engineer will report to the Trenchless Services Engineering Lead, having primary responsibilities supporting the execution of design and field services associated with trenchless services: engineering, design and construction applications.
Responsibilities
- Support engineering and design practices, including hydraulic fracture and inadvertent returns analyses.
- Conduct front-end information collection initiatives such as geotechnical investigation programs and survey coordination.
- Evaluate feasibility of trenchless design and construction, and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Manage data, ensure quality control, and oversee planning and risk management for trenchless initiatives.
- Manage the execution of trenchless services for all-inclusive projects or as a component to larger projects.
- Review, stamp, and seal Trenchless project related deliverables as a licensed Professional Engineer.
- Interface with clients and take on project management roles on assigned Trenchless projects.
- Travel as needed for field-based assignments, including site reconnaissance and oversight of trenchless pipeline installations.
- Monitor and report on daily field activities, and present field data with high quality and in a timely manner.
- Communicate regularly with the Trenchless Services Team and project team members.
- Perform desk-top route selection and feasibility evaluations for trenchless crossings.
- Develop subsurface investigation programs to determine construction feasibility for various trenchless installation methods.
- Evaluate surface and subsurface conditions based on collected data to determine feasibility and preferred construction technique.
- Interface with discipline leads and production staff (e.g., geotechnical, CAD) to support trenchless design deliverables.
- Communicate with clients regarding project status and technical discussions.
- Estimate quantities of materials used and disposed of for trenchless pipeline installations.
- Estimate installation loading and stress for trenchless pipeline installations.
- Assess the application of trenchless technologies (e.g., Horizontal Directional Drilling, microtunneling, tunneling, Direct Pipe®) and participate in method selection.
- Perform calculations to determine carrier pipe and coating specifications.
- Define workspace requirements for applicable construction equipment.
- Prepare and/or review project documentation including specifications, bid packages, drawings, reports, assessments, and data sets.
- Build knowledge and utilize software models for trenchless pipeline design.
- Interface with external project team members and other company functions on multidisciplinary projects.
- Develop permit application documents and drawings.
- Understand and adhere to applicable industry standards and governing codes for various market sectors.
- Ensure compliance of documents, calculations, and reports with project legislation and standardization.
- Prepare field engineering and as-built documents.
- Contribute to the definition/updating of department standards and procedures, and provide feedback/lessons learned from projects.
- Focus on successful project execution using HDR’s PMO processes and aligning with client delivery goals.
- Establish and execute workflow delivery for all projects.
- Procure, manage, and coordinate with subconsultants.
- Perform construction oversight and/or observation in the field, monitoring activities, identifying problematic conditions, and providing recommendations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of professional experience in consulting/engineering, preferably with Horizontal Directional Drilling, microtunneling, and/or Direct Pipe®.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification.
- Experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Experience in a remote work environment.
- Experience in design and knowledge of trenchless construction methods.
- Team-oriented with a strong desire to be accountable and reliable.
- Strong writing and computer skills, including proven experience in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments, manage time, and prioritize tasks independently.
- Self-motivated and able to work autonomously while maintaining frequent communication with remote teams.
- Accountability for time and work ethic.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Travel is required; frequency and duration dependent on project needs and may be extensive.
- Subject to a pre-employment drug test.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng) license).
- Previous experience with Microsoft Office applications, MicroStation, or other relevant software.
- Experience with GeoStudio/Ensoft for slope stability, settlement, seepage, and deep foundation response.
- Experience with Bentley suite of geotechnical data management and visualization software (gINT/OpenGround/LeapFrog).
