Overview

The Grounds Maintenance role at Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) on Granville Island is a temporary, full-time, on-site position. The successful candidate will work within the Maintenance Department to keep Granville Island in excellent repair, cleanliness, and safety for a variety of tasks including cleaning, minor repairs, and grounds care.

Job Details

This is an 18-month temporary role with working hours from Sunday to Thursday, 8am-4pm, with shift premiums for hours outside regular time, including additional pay on weekends and specific shifts.

Responsibilities

  • Operate various fleet and utility vehicles (sweepers, scrubbers, lifts, etc.).
  • Perform exterior cleaning of sidewalks, plazas, docks, gutters, and windows.
  • Conduct minor repairs including carpentry, asphalt patching, and installation tasks.
  • Maintain waste compactor sites and support seasonal outdoor tasks.
  • Assist senior technicians with HVAC, machinery, and equipment maintenance.
  • Support event setups and takedowns as required.
  • Use a work order system to prioritize tasks and interact courteously with the public.

Requirements

  • Certification (or willingness to obtain one within one month) for forklift, scissor lift, and boom lift operation.
  • Valid driver’s license and at least 1 year experience in grounds, property, or building maintenance.
  • Training in landscaping, grounds care, and building maintenance, with proficiency in using power and hand tools.
  • Basic carpentry knowledge and ability to install interlocking pavers.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations per the Workers Compensation Board and Canada Labour Code.
  • Ability to work safely in marine and high-traffic environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Basic construction trades knowledge (plumbing, electrical, mechanical) is an asset.
  • A WHMIS certificate.
