About the role
Contractor Monitor / Construction Manager
Brookfield is seeking qualified candidates to fill the role of Contractor Monitor / Construction Manager for projects managed from the Brookfield New York offices (either Potsdam, Queensbury, Watertown, or Fulton). This position will report to the Technical Manager. The Contractor Monitor will be responsible for overseeing the on-site activities of construction contractors who are performing work at our facilities, ensuring that health, safety, security, & environmental standards are strictly adhered to. The role also involves monitoring daily and overall construction progress to verify that quality workmanship is maintained in accordance with applicable construction procedures, methods, codes, and specifications, along with maintaining schedules. Projects will encompass civil, mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation & control engineering disciplines. This is an excellent opportunity to enter the renewable energy industry.This position will involve a large amount of field technical work to ensure HSSE managed system requirements are met, and field construction deliverables stay on task to meet schedule and budget requirements.
Responsibilities
- Ensure contractors, sub-contractors and their employees are complying with safety & environmental regulations and contract requirements.
- Monitor construction activities to ensure design, technical specifications, and contracts are followed and that work is completed according to schedule and within budget.
- Prepare job planning documentation working closely with project stakeholders.
- Assess the quality of the HSSE discussions & written daily job plans.
- Attend pre-bid, pre-construction, & monthly construction meetings, including documentation of meeting minutes.
- Conduct Safe Work and Environmental Observations on medium and high risk work.
- Attend all Contractor's Health, Safety and Environmental meetings.
- Inspect all work performed to ensure compliance with the contract drawings, technical specifications, regulatory requirements and applicable codes.
- Prepare and submit daily construction reports, reporting on health & safety, environmental, and construction progress.
- Recommend corrective courses of action to management as issues arise.
- Recommend changes in the work plan if efficiency in work practices can be improved.
- Conduct contractor post-work evaluations regarding health and safety, environmental, technical, project management and financial performance.
Requirements
- An interest in renewable energy production, specifically hydroelectric power.
- A desire to work in the field in different environments and with a variety of contractors.
- Basic knowledge to be able to inspect in-progress construction work to ensure compliance with the contract documents, technical specifications, permits, and drawings.
- Ability to organize, plan, prioritize and manage multiple tasks and projects.
- Good oral, written and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface and coordinate work daily with other Brookfield divisions and external organizations.
- Good negotiation skills with clients, contractors, and vendors.
- Strong project management and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and with minimal daily supervision.
- A practical, adaptable, innovative, collaborative, and solution-focused approach to issues.
- Due to the size of the region, some projects will require travel, with most using an out-of-town work during the week / home-on-the weekends structure; depending on the proximity of the project to the successful candidate's reporting office.
- Hours will be project-specific and will vary. While 40-50 hours per week is typical, weeks requiring 50-60+ hours will be common during peak construction season.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil, Electrical, or Mechanical Engineering is preferred; applicable work experience will also be considered.
- Strong computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office products.
Assets
- Experience in engineering or construction management.
- Proficient in industry-standard construction practices.
- Experience/exposure in the hydropower, wind power or power generation fields.
- Field experience related to the hazards associated with the work.
- Training in occupational Health, Safety and Environmental regulations.
This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid driver's license. A motor vehicle report (MVR) that shows driving history, including information about your driver's license, will be required if you are selected as the successful candidate.
