Position Summary
The RN Unit Manager functions at a professional nursing level, utilizing both administrative leadership and clinical expertise. The goal is to ensure comprehensive care and treatment for our resident population. This role involves collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in designing, implementing, and evaluating unit programs. The position holds twenty-four-hour responsibility for the continuity of nursing care and resident welfare management.
Responsibilities and Accountabilities
- Utilizes expertise in a leadership role as a manager of an assigned unit.
- Collaborates with the Director of Nursing to maintain adequate nursing coverage, ensuring safe care 24/7 while effectively managing manpower and limiting overtime/agency use.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates unit protocols and standards following proper approval channels.
- Assesses the work performance of nursing personnel against job descriptions, unit standards, and individual goals.
- Implements progressive counseling and, when necessary, recommends or initiates disciplinary action based on facility policies.
- Encourages nursing staff to perform to their fullest potential.
- Provides professional guidance and supervision to both professional and nonprofessional unit staff.
- Conducts periodic meetings with staff and the interdisciplinary team to disseminate information, develop protocols, establish goals, and evaluate effectiveness.
- Attends committee meetings as requested.
- Assumes nursing administrative responsibilities for weekend and holiday coverage as requested.
- Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality assurance activities and Quality Improvement reviews.
- Identifies staff educational needs and plans programs with the Staff Development Coordinator, evaluating program effectiveness.
- Demonstrates, teaches, and evaluates nursing skills for direct resident care specific to the unit's population.
- Participates with the interdisciplinary team in developing, implementing, and evaluating resident care goals.
- Initiates resident-centered team meetings using a problem-solving approach.
- Serves as a role model in direct resident care delivery using the nursing process.
- Assumes responsibility for MDS completion on the unit.
- Provides consultation for discharge plans in collaboration with residents, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
- Evaluates written and verbal communication regarding resident care continuity and takes appropriate action.
- Participates in developing programs to facilitate continuity of care during resident transfers.
- Assumes responsibility for independent study to improve managerial and clinical skills.
- Prepares written reports, reviews records, and participates in data collection.
- Adjusts schedules to evaluate staff on evening and night shifts.
- Assumes responsibility for assuring daily staffing assignments.
- Participates in facility and/or nursing committees as requested.
- Submits requests for the budget.
- Supervises and evaluates Unit Clerks assigned to the unit.
- Participates in staff recruitment, including interviewing and selection of nursing personnel.
- Ensures resident safety to minimize fire and accident potential, adhering to legal, safety, health, fire, and sanitation codes.
- Ensures residents and families receive high-quality service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere, recognizing individual needs and rights.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Specific Educational/Vocational Requirements
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Minimum of one year of experience in a leadership role (e.g., head nurse, supervisor).
- Current licensure by the NJ State Board of Examiners of Nurses.
- Membership in the Association of Professional Nurses is recommended.
