About Strava
Strava is the app for active people. No matter your sport or how you track it, Strava’s got you covered. Find your crew, crush your goals, and make every effort count. Start your journey with Strava today.
Our mission is simple: to motivate people to live their best active lives. We believe in the power of movement to connect and drive people forward.
About This Role
At Strava, the Foundation engineering team safeguards the infrastructure supporting the journeys of millions of athletes. We supply the secure tools, frameworks, and platforms that underpin every feature our athletes value.
As a Senior Engineer on Foundation, you’ll shape and evolve Strava’s internal platform—empowering teams to move quickly and innovate boldly, crafting the developer experience for engineers across the company, building tools, partnering with teams, and enabling them to deliver features confidently and safely.
We follow a flexible hybrid model that translates to more than half of your time on-site in our San Francisco office — three days per week.
What You’ll Do:
As a Platform Engineer passionate about developer enablement, you will:
- Develop and sustain shared platform tools, frameworks, and infrastructure to support fast, secure development across various languages and runtimes (e.g. Go, Python, Scala, Ruby, etc.).
- Reduce friction and boost velocity in developer workflows using code generation, templating, deployment pipelines, and shared libraries.
- Define, document, standardize, and enable guidelines for service platform usage and governance.
- Evaluate, integrate, or build developer infrastructure tools, such as CI/CD, deployment automation, monitoring/alerting, and internal dashboards.
- Mentor other engineers, provide guidance and support, help incorporate feedback from across the org, and foster a culture of shared ownership and collaboration.
What You’ll Bring to the Team:
- Proven foundation in software engineering.
- Comfortable working with various programming languages (e.g. Go, Python, Scala, Ruby), or a readiness paired with the ability to learn rapidly.
- Proven understanding of building, deploying, and operating distributed microservices in a containerized cloud environment (e.g. Kubernetes).
- Experience designing, building, or maintaining developer tooling, shared libraries, or internal platform services.
- An ownership approach, and an ability to drive projects end-to-end with minimal supervision.
- Developer empathy and a platform mindset. You can identify with engineers and propose extensible solutions to the problems they are facing.
Some of our Technical Expectations:
We're not looking for 100% coverage; if you match any of these qualifications, we'd love to hear from you:
- Experience with observability tools (metrics, logging, tracing), telemetry pipelines, monitoring, and alerting infrastructure.
- Prior experience working in a polyglot platform or migrating a monolithic or single-language platform to a multi-language ecosystem.
- Experience writing and maintaining library code for microservice applications.
- Background in developer efficiency, build systems, CI/CD pipelines, or internal tooling.
- Experience with deployment automation, cloud services, and platform operations.
